When he falls, he is scared. His family, his whole world disappears from his reach, and he can’t stop himself. He falls for years, through the black vacuum of space as the lights he once knew disappears into tiny dots. When he crashes, he is terrified. He picks himself up and walks towards a city, mistaking the bright lights for some form of kin, shivering as he tries to shine. In the city he finds only false light and angry people. When he sleeps, he is sad. He dreams of the light he’s lost and the happiness of his life in the sky. He pretends to be human, following the crowds and learning to keep warm by fire and layers of clothing.
But when he meets Sherlock Holmes, he is happy. A detective, the man claims to be, and he needs help. He needs someone who is observant and can watch for suspicious activity, passing unnoticed on the streets. Luckily for John, he’s always been good at watching. He begins to hope again, to shine a little and smile, leaving golden dust behind that fascinates the detective. The day John remembers how to laugh is the day he moves in with Sherlock. Every night he looks back up at the sky, hoping his family isn’t worried for him here on earth with the man that makes him shine as brightly as he did when he was with them.
