SuperWho Gen Fanfic: Return What You Borrow

I’m not okay with what happened to Jack’s wrist strap in the Fiftieth Anniversary episode. So I made up a reason for WHY it was there, and then I fixed it.

Warning: Slightly spoilery for the Fiftieth Anniversary episode of Doctor Who.

No pairings

Jack tried not to fidget, keeping his hands firmly on the rocks glass in front of him and not on his empty wrist. Two years without the thing, and he still felt the vortex manipulator’s absence. Jack didn’t know all of what was happening out there without him, but he knew enough. That was why he chose this backwater bar, because it led the Doctor to him once, and maybe it would again.

The time dribbled away like the bright red cocktail Jack fenced with his fingers. He focused on the rounds of ice as they slowly shrank, rifling back and back through his memories, some darkened, some shining still. It mattered that the Doctor still needed him, even if only a little part of him.

So it looks like that nsfw superwood bit I posted yesterday is going to be a longer fic:

Lifelines Ch. 1

Dean and Castiel are killed averting the apocalypse, leaving Sam and Jack to pick up the pieces. When Sam catches wind there might be a way to bring them back, can anything stop him from his course?

I wrote a little sam/jack ficlet. I will probably expand it, but for now, here’s the nsfw part, below a cut:

“Sam!” Jack caught up with the taller man and grabbed his arm. Sam started to pull away, but instead found himself with Jack’s arms around him, head tucked against his shoulder. A ragged sob tore from his chest, whole body shaking. Jack didn’t speak, just held him, rubbing a soothing hand along his back.

It’s not your fault. I’m sorry you lost your brother. You saved the world. Jack Harkness knew better than most just how shallow words could be. He could feel how fragile Sam was in his arms, and how could he not be? Yes, the world was saved, but at what great cost? Alice’s face flickered in his mind and his heart clenched.

“It should have been me,” Sam said finally, brokenly.

Jack pulled back a little and kissed the tears on his cheeks. “You aren’t alone.”

Sam suddenly grabbed Jack’s face and kissed him fiercely, shoving him up against the alley wall. Jack moaned. “Sam…”

The remaining Winchester didn’t speak, just went for Jack’s belt before shoving the bracers down, and followed by the man’s trousers and pants. Jack knew this too, this need to feel anything. He fished the lube out of his pocket as Sam spun him around, barely avoiding scraping his face on the bricks.  Sam took it and pinned his wrists above his head with one large hand, the other roughly pushing inside Jack. Pain was good sometimes and Jack felt himself welcoming it. After all, he hadn’t been able to save Dean either.

Far too quickly Sam was pushing himself inside. Jack groaned and braced himself against the larger man, bare knees scraping against the wall. Sam bit at his neck and shoulder, just taking what he wanted. Jack wanted to give him everything, to remind him that sometimes life had to go on.

With a groan Sam filled him, dropping his forehead against Jack’s shoulder and loosening his grip when he came. Jack dropped one hand to get himself quickly off with Sam still inside him. Then he turned and wrapped Sam in his arms, kissing his cheek.

“I’m sorry,” said Sam softly.

“Don’t be,” said Jack, running a hand through his hair. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Sam took a deep breath and kissed Jack one more time before pulling away and looking down at the ground. Jack quickly got himself tucked away and back in order. “Come on, Sam. Let’s see where the road takes us.”

would you rather be the person in the first 5 minutes of supernatural or the person in the first 5 minutes of torchwood

I feel like first 5 minute characters are way less likely to die in Torchwood. Way less likely than the main Torchwood team actually. Also I want to be that old woman who rolls her eyes at bloody Torchwood when they stop by asking about the blowfish.

I think you probably don’t want to be in the last five minutes of Torchwood.

And definitely not in any season finales.

*whispers* Sam holding a baby and Jack smiling at how peaceful they both look.

Jack stood in the doorway, just watching as Sam rocked slowly in the chair, holding the little girl. She had one chubby little finger wrapped around his pinky, watching his face as he tunelessly hummed a song at her.

Sam looked up and caught Jack’s grin, giving him a shy smile back. “She was crying.”

“Well she’s not now,” Jack stayed where he was, not wanting to ruin the moment.

Sam had other idea, standing carefully and walking to Jack to kiss him. “You want to hold her?”

“No, no, I think you’re doing a fine job. Not that great with babies.” Something flickered in his eyes, something Sam knew meant one of his secrets, one of his past lives.

“She’s almost asleep again anyway.” Same rocked her and carried her back over to the crib. “I’ll be back to bed in a minute.”

“All right.” Jack playfully swatted at his bottom as he walked away. Sam’s eyes automatically checked the wards they’d put on the crib as he set her down. For once the night was quiet and still as he watched her settle deeper into sleep.

I just realized that there are major parallels between Sam’s relationship with John and Jack’s relationship with the Doctor.

Jack wants the Doctor to approve of and be proud of him, but doesn’t agree with his approach and isn’t certain that earning the Doctor’s appreciation (and love) is worth sacrificing his own personal purpose anymore. So there’s this conflicted tug of war inside Jack, going on whenever they meet, because Jack can’t help but love the Doctor even though he has major doubts and also some resentment for being abandoned. The Doctor would tell him that he had something else pressing going on, of course, that Jack couldn’t possibly know about. Which Jack will accept and believe, although a cold accusatory part of him will always think, “of course you prioritized everything else over me.”

The resentment will never go away, and it makes a hard scar that will always stay between them. They may have good reasons for what they’ve done, but while they may be able to justify it to one another, forgiveness is something else entirely.

Now replace ‘Jack’ and ‘The Doctor’ with ‘Sam’ and ‘John.’

I love this! But I also think there’s some major parallels between Jack and the Doctor and the way DEAN and John relate.

Specifically because Dean and Jack are both soldier-types. Jack and Dean both unquestioningly follow that other person, sometimes with almost starry-eyed affection despite the consequences. I agree that Jack has some resentment for being left behind, but we pretty much never see it expressed (except perhaps as his final choice to leave the Doctor at the end of Saxon!Master).

And Dean has obvious resentment against his father (for the lifestyle, for putting all of this responsibility shit on him, etc) but Dean never has a chance to express that resentment until John is actually dead (I’m thinking specifically of when he confronts his demon!self in the dream world and he finally admits he doesn’t deserve to die).

I think they both dedicated themselves to someone they thought was bigger and better themselves and they were let down.

I think Jack follows the Doctor because he’s trying to prove to himself that he’s not a bad man (essentially for redemption from what he’s done before, being a conman, what he can’t even remember, etc.), and he’s looking to the Doctor for that confirmation. In the same way Dean is following John because he wants to be the loyal son, and because he has it in his head that the more loyal he is the more safe Sam will be (and he’s obviously seeking redemption for THAT ONE TIME he fucked up as a kid). Jack and Dean NEED this approval, in a way I don’t really see Sam needing it. Wanting it, sure, but not needing it to confirm their identity in the way Jack and Dean do.

I also don’t think Jack ever suffers the same rebellion that Sam does. I guess you could argue leaving the Doctor for Torchwood is a separation of sort but it doesn’t have the animosity with which Sam left hunting behind. Whenever the Doctor shows up Jack will jump in to the fray, he always does. And I see Dean doing the same too, but Sam will never readily say “yes sir” unless he’s personally sure of the orders. There’s just this sort of “favorite son”, “trained soldier” trope they both fit into in regards to the Doctor and John.
