You know, I have gotten to learn a bunch of the other abbreviations and so forth, ie..DFP Sherlock, but what in the living hell is this Alpha Omega Universe stuff I keep coming across in the Sherlock fics on AO3? I assume itās another fandom being mixed in, but I am just not familiar.
Oh honey. Where do I begin. There are wiki articles on it, but Alpha/omega is a type of AU. I canāt really explain it well, but does anyone want to explain to my friend here Omegaverse?
If you want to read one of the best omegaverse fics ever written, The Gilded Cage.
Hey @merindab – I know youāre familiar, and you prob have more recs too!Ā
The article I tend to point people at is the fanlore one. And yeah, I have, well quite a few. Fics tagged omega verse that iāve written or am involved with are here, here and here.Ā
The short version of omega verse is that the universe includes a second gender, on top of the basic male/female one (yes I know gender is more than a binary). These are alphas and omegas. People without a second gender are called betas. Alphas of either gender can impregnate omegas of either gender. (i wrote this one with pregnant omega John/alpha Mary, but be warned Mary isnāt a nice person in it). Omegas generally have some sort of heat cycle, essentially a time when they go intoĀ āfuck or dieā mode, without the death part. Alphas generally have a knot, the way dogs do. There can be bonding, which is usually when an alpha bites an omega. Scent is usually important.
It sounds complicated, but once you read a few fics, youāll get the hang of it. And there are variations even within omegaverse itself. Heat can come with some consent issues, but at least in mine Iām careful about it. (This ficĀ of mine is omegaverse without any smut) I sometimes like using omegaverse to explore gender roles. For instance in my āMycroftās Choice,ā Mycroft, as an omega, is facing some of the same prejudice and difficulty a woman might, given that heās capable of breeding.
And then sometimes itās just an excuse to write smutty, kinky porn.
Iām also going to tag @greencarnations cause I know she can add more recs and correct anything I messed up or missed.
20:A character you like but you really, really shouldnāt.
Itās not a fictional character, but John D. Rockefeller. He could be a ruthless bastard but he did always believe he was acting right.
37:A book you are scared is not going to be all you hoped it would be
I still havenāt picked up Game of Thrones. Or watched it.
40:Has there ever been a book you wish you could un-read?
I donāt generally finish a book if itās that bad. The worst one I read most of was āBlack Windā by Clive Cussler and his son Dirk. I like Dirk Pitt books. Now I donāt know if itās old age or he just stopped caring, but the point where I tossed the book across the room was where the main characters were literally saved by the author.Ā
As in āClive Cusslerā just happened to be boating in the Inchon river and picked up the protagonists.
No.
Fascinating! Have you seen the History Channel program The Men Who Built America? Rockefeller is on there, (with JP Morgan, Vanderbilt, Carnegie and the like) great program. Its on Netflix.Ā
Game of Thrones the book is fantastic. The series? eh. Season one and two were great, they followed the books, then the showrunners just went apeshit and lost their damn minds. IMHO anyway š
Ā I have seen the men who built america, but I also read a book about him. I aināt saying he was always right, but heās fascinating. I love history though, which is ALSO why i love the Dirk Pitt books, especially the early ones. The newer ones are crap
