WHAT THE HELL?!??!?!

SEASON 3 EPISODE 3 SPOILERS AHEAD!!! MAJOR SPOILERS AND RANT!!!  BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!

Sherlock’s trying to make excuses for Mary shooting him, saying that she didn’t go for a kill shot and called the ambulance, but HIS HEART FUCKING STOPPED and it was the thought of JOHN BEING IN DANGER that brought him back.

So YES Mary DID kill him.  FUCK SHERLOCK STOP TRYING TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR HER JUST BECAUSE SHE’S JOHN’S WIFE.

Goddammit Sherlock, you’re breaking my heart here.

And I’m kind of pissed at John too.  I mean I was willing to give Mary a chance at the beginning, and she was charming, fun, witty, interesting, so while it hurt to see Sherlock having to step aside for her I could accept that.  But now she turns out to be some assassin killer, who apparently has killed many people for god knows what reason, so no, I’m NOT OK with John just being all oh-I-don’t-care-about-your-past.

SHE ALMOST KILLED SHERLOCK!! THE MAN WHO SAVED YOUR LIFE!! THE MAN WHO DOVE INTO A FIRE FOR YOU!!  And he fucking cares about you and your happiness SO FUCKING MUCH he’s willing to forgive his attempted-murderer because you apparently LOVE HER so fucking much and he doesn’t want to hurt you.  So fuck you John, and your blindness.

On top of that, to protect your happy little domestic life, Sherlock KILLS for you. And he gets sent on a SUICIDE MISSION as punishment.  Sherlock was willing to DIE FOR YOU, John, and you would just go home to your happy little murderer wife with your little baby and live your happy little lives while SHERLOCK HAS TO PAY THE PRICE FOR IT.   So yeah, forget love, even as a “friend” you’re doing a marvelously shitty job of it John, much less a supposed “best friend”.

No.  I am NOT fucking OK with this.  Fuck this.  Right now I’m pissed at just about everyone in this show EXCEPT Sherlock…and Molly.  Molly’s still cool.  Fucking hell.  Fuck it all.  Season 4 better have some answers, because I am so close to being done.

THIS is pretty much exactly how I feel.

Why The Holmes Parents are Perfect for Sherlock

wellingtongoose:

Analysis of Sherlock’s parents and why their normality is vital in explaining how Sherlock became the man he is.

image

The moment I saw them I had the sinking feeling that Mr and Mrs Holmes are irreparably wrong.

Then I realise that this was only my own narcissism getting in the way of logical analysis because if one looks at them from an impartial perspective Sherlock’s parents are surprisingly right, in every sense of the word.

I explain:

  • Why the Holmes Parents fit perfectly into Sherlock and Mycroft’s background. They had to be ordinary in order to explain why Sherlock and Mycroft are extraordinary.
  • How normal loving parents can produce such eccentrically maladjusted offspring
  • What we can tell about the Holmes Brothers’ childhood from their parents.

The Holmes parents’ apparently banality appears to have spoilt many deeply held fan beliefs regarding “Mummy”. The truth is I also fell into the horrific logical trap of assuming that just because Sherlock has arrested emotional development – his parents must be utterly eccentric, over medicated, psychologically unstable, adulterers who evidently neglected him something terrible.

What we all lacked was a sarcastic voice of reason to interject with a perfectly time “really?” and an elegantly raised eyebrow.

The age old belief that parents pass their problems onto their children is definitely true but the way these problems manifest in children can be surprising and counter-initiative.

For a doctor who has been surprised too many times to actually be surprised – I really should have seen the Holmes parents’ coming because actually they fit perfectly into Sherlock and Mycroft’s background.

Okay this is about sherlock and mycroft, but i can relate to this pretty hard with my own parents too.

thedetectivedoesntdance:

two very important relationships in sherlock’s life are illustrated wonderfully with just two quick look into his mind palace. let’s look at sherlock and mycroft, and sherlock and john, and what each of them means to him and his genius.

I was thinking about the sign of three. “I will solve your murder, but it will take John Watson to save your life.”

Major Scholto was the victim. Sherlock told him he was the one murdered (and nabbed the photographer).

John Watson was prepared to kick down the door.

But it was Sherlock that talked him down. Of course John would have done the actual doctoring, but this time, Sherlock did save the life.

For Science Jawn – You Asked For It, You Got It, Shot by Shot

Just want to start off with I listened to the Wedding episode of Three Patch while I was at physical therapy, and I laughed so hard when Dixiebell said she didn’t see the Johnlock I almost fell off the treadmill. Here you go, Dixiebell. Let me polish those Johnlock goggles right up.

I’ll get to the other drunk scenes later, if there’s anything I want to say about them. This is the big one for me though.

I don’t want to make these meta posts all about me, but I think I want to preface this by saying: I analyze, and create, body language for a living. I have years of experience posing people to look natural, happy, relaxed, in love. Quite often this is done on a micro level, by little tweaks, bending an elbow, relaxing a shoulder, leaning a head in. These are things I do. Try to get a very uncomfortable bride and groom to look relaxed and in love when they’re nervous out of their minds and just want to get to the drinking part of the day, that is something I do a lot. Create frames that make people look closer together when they’re not, I do that constantly.

I lost it in this scene because I finally, finally got the sense that the writers were going to actually go for it. Actually go for the gay. Not in a queerbaiting way. Not this season, maybe not even next season (whenever the hell that is going to be), but at some point. This scene is a hell of a commitment to make if they’re sitting on the fence. I got that on the first viewing, and then even I was still amazed at how blatant it is when I sat down to analyze it.

Getting drunk doesn’t make you gay (duh). It does, however, lower your inhibitions. John purposefully got more drunk than Sherlock wanted him to be—two shots at the bar (“one more, he mustn’t see,” and then maybe that third one he loses track of, but as far as I can tell that extra shot goes to Sherlock because John picks up that glass with his left hand and then hands that drink to Sherlock). When they move upstairs after Hudders wakes them up, they are both still drinking (I missed that the first time). John, at least, and probably Sherlock too, wanted to lose some of his constant control. And what happens?

Close-up shots of Sherlock and Jawn.

There is a basic rule of framing in visual art (I came to this rule from my experience in graphic design, but it applies to photography and cinematography too). You generally put the larger amount of negative space in front of the subject, towards where they are looking. So, basically, these two frames are framed “wrong.” The effect: their faces look closer together. (This was done in ASIB too, but I’m not going to go back and look for it.)

Now we have a little dance where they keep leaning towards each other. ALL I’M DOING HERE IS DESCRIBING THE ACTION.

When John leans back, Sherlock leans forward. (This is seen easier on video, I ALMOST figured out how to trim in QuickPlayer):

image

image

(How’s about John’s legs being all wide-open too…) More close faces via reverse shots.

image

image

Just in case you missed it the first time (this is easier to see on video too, sorry), Sherlock leans back,

image

and John, well,

image

John basically falls in between Sherlock’s legs (and there’s a little musical twinkle there):

image

John:”I don’t mind. Am I a woman?”

Guys.

“Am I pretty?” conversation.

Faces closer in close-ups, right on the edge of the frame, literally as close as they can get in this type of shot:

image

image

Just to make that really clear

image

They’re so close now they’re sharing the frame in the over the shoulder shot (OSS). They weren’t before. Look at that tiny sliver of negative space between them. Look at allllll that room Sherlock could be sitting in on the right.

image

Faces smushing.

Now they are both sitting up, mirroring each other’s poses, in the middle of the screen.

image

Both literally on the edges of their chairs.

John invades Sherlock’s shots.

image

John falls back. Sherlock falls back (we don’t see him do it, but the next shot after a couple close-ups he is already back in his chair, mirroring John’s pose)

image

but this is too far away for John, who immediately puts his feet up

image

“I’m you, aren’t I.” They’re practically horizontal and overlapping.

image

Ding dong. Client time. DAMMIT. Hello near-kiss with Moriarty moment…

This is plain-speaking body language as created by two master actors and one hell of a director. How anyone can view this scene and NOT see “repressed lust” written all over it I’ve no idea.

Honestly, I still haven’t quite figured out how they managed to make the episode where John marries a woman be the gayest one yet. Not that I’m complaining or anything.

Johnlock–it’s not just for fans anymore. (Sherlock SPOILERS)

prettyarbitrary:

You know, I have never been one to actually buy into fannish ships.  I mean, they’re fun to run with, and it’s fun to take things from the show and reinterpret them with a different spin.

But really and truly, I had not, previous to this season, believed that Sherlock and John canonically had a Thing.  When the writers called ‘no homo,’ I believed them.

But after this episode, I no longer ship Sherlock and John ‘fannishly.’  I no longer buy the writers’ insistence that these characters are not attracted to each other.  I don’t think it’s the people who want a queer reading they’re lying to.  I think the ones they’re lying to are the homophobes they (or the BBC) are afraid they’d upset with an explicit queer relationship.

Fine, we may never see them snogging explicitly on screen.  But it’s IN THE TEXT.
