Decades of failing to recognize ADHD in girls has created a “lost generation” of women – Quartz
Apparently the universe is trying to tell me something because this was in my email today.
Our Understanding Of ADHD Is Changing. Here’s Why That Matters For Girls and Women.
There are sub-types of ADHD, such as Inattentive Sub-type ADHD, but Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD is what people usually think of when they think of children with ADHD, and that sub-type is most often associated with boys. Inattentive ADHD, which girls are more likely to have, show symptoms like being easily distracted, forgetful, and disorganized, as well as not finishing assigned homework. Even signs of hyperactivity may manifest itself differently in girls for several reasons, including social and cultural influences. Girls often feel pressured to mask their symptoms because of societal expectations about how they should behave.
In case anyone else needed to see this. That bolded line could be a description of my entire academic career from elementary school until I got on my anti-depressants (that also help my ADD).
The worst part about having mental health issues is that you’re seemingly required to have a breakdown in order for people to understand how hard you were trying to hold yourself together.
tbh you get so used to your mental illness that its not even like “oh god this cant be happening” like it used to be. its just like lol “here we go again another mood drop” “oh well would u look at that i cant stop shaking” “what do you know? i dont feel anything” and its such normalcy to you that it becomes this dreadful routine that never ends and the worst part about all of it is that you dont care anymore
The brain is an organ. Mental illnesses are illnesses of that organ. Brain scans show that there is a physical difference between a healthy brain and a sick brain. Telling someone “You’re not really sick. It’s all in your head.” is like telling someone with asthma “It’s not real, it’s all in your lungs.” The brain is an organ that can malfunction as much as any other organ.
