With casting Rupert it was like if Sherlock wasn’t around it would sort of be his show. He’s the best detective Scotland Yard’s got – that’s what Sherlock says about him in the original stories, so to get away from this sort of more ratty faced and gnarky Lestrade it was about trying to do something different with it.

Lestrade is hardly in the stories. Just really briefly. So I’d maybe ask ‘why didn’t you give a shit about him? Didn’t you care?’
What I like about Lestrade is his honesty. He is an honest copper, who generally tries. I think he finds life a bit difficult. He is not over-equipped in there (points to his head). But he has integrity and honesty and has heart. And what I really like is the lines Mark and Steven give me to say. In Hounds, he was rubbish undercover. Wearing those shades inside the pub.
