Sequels, prequels, remakes, adaptations, and re-imaginings of books, short stories, movies, or TV shows written by someone other than the original author

are

f a n f i c t i o n .

Their fanfiction is not more valid than my fanfiction just because their fanfiction costs money to consume and mine is free. Their fanfiction is not more valid than my fanfiction because they made theirs with a studio or publishing house and I made mine with a shit laptop on my sofa in my spare time. Their fanfiction is not more valid than my fanfiction because they are men, or because they are wealthy, or because they are famous, or because they are educated. My fanfiction is valid. Their fanfiction is valid.

The only difference is that theirs comes with a paycheck, and paycheck does. not. validate someone’s fanfiction over someone else’s when neither of them are the original creator. that’s the beauty of fanfiction. we’re all just nerds. some of us are just well-funded nerds.

Another way to support your fandom writers.

azriona:

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts lately about how fandom can
be better to its writers.  They’re all
wonderful posts, with lots of good things to say about the importance of not
just leaving Kudos, but also comments.

And this might seem self-serving, but I’m going to say it
anyway.  Right now, most of fandom is
located on Tumblr, and I think these posts are leaving out a very important
step that’s just as simple as hitting the Kudos button.

Reblogs.

I cannot tell you how many people who commented on Mise said
that the reason they read it was because they saw it appear so many times on
their dash.  And I can’t tell you how
excited it makes me to see it appear on my dash because someone else is talking
about it.  Honestly, sometimes I think I
get more thrill out of being on someone’s rec list or seeing someone else
promote my story than I do from getting that Kudos email.

(I do love that Kudos email, though, don’t get me wrong.)

I feel like this used to happen more often.  Even a year ago – I’d see the reblogs of “New
Chapter” posts for stories I followed before I’d see the original post.  And it was great, because I’d see the excited
squee of other readers and that would in turn get me excited to read, and then I’d jump in even more excited than I
would have been otherwise.  These days…
yeah, not so much.  I can’t tell you the
last time I saw a reblog of a story I followed.
Or a story I didn’t follow, honestly.
I’m not sure what changed.

Here’s the thing: just like with artists… if you “like” that
art post, only the artist will know.  But if you reblog it, then you’re giving
someone else a chance to like it too
.

Want to support your favorite fandom writers?  Want to make sure they get all the love and
attention they deserve?  Then reblog their story announcements.  Share
their stories
on Tumblr or Twitter. (AO3 even has a handy little button that lets you do it super easy.) It takes all of a minute to do – less, in some cases.

You don’t have to be a fic rec blog to tell your flist you like a fic, and that they should read it too.

I don’t know about other writers, but I track both janto321 (my ao3 name) and merindab (my blog name) so if you tag either of them  I’ll most likely see it. And it makes me damned happy to do so.

And always, always, thank you for reading.

backstreet-gurl:

Thank you to fic writers for telling the stories that canon didn’t tell.

Thank you to fic writers for giving minor characters a voice.

Thank you to fic writers for expanding these worlds that we love so much.

Thank you to fic writers for sharing your talent, your ideas, and your words with us all.

Thank you to fic writers for your hard work, commitment, dedication, time, energy, and compassion.

And thank you to the readers who make it all worthwhile.

Fandom Firsts And Currents Ask

Fill out as much or as little as you want, and leave any you can’t remember/don’t know blank.

First Het OTP: Malcolm/Inara

ReRead of

Get What We Want by SailorChibi

Slash OTP:  Johnlock, Mystrade, Janto, Harkstiel
Femslash OTP: Still don’t have one
OT3: Sharkstiel, Johnlockstrade

How did you find fanfic/fandoms online? Google. Then I found Chances Archive before finding tumblr and AO3.

When did you first start reading fanfic? Not really until 2012 or so (better late then never?)

If you write fanfic, when did you start, in what fandom, and what pairing?  I wrote a couple G rated Star Trek things in High School, but that was pre-internet. The first fanfic I actually posted was Gen Jack Harkness and River Song Doctor Who fanfic.

Do you have a favorite fanfic?  I have a few I like to reread. The aforementioned Come Get What you Want,

Brief Interlude Before The Storm by tiger_in_the_flightdeck,

John Joins In by Amuly

Torquay Arms by chasingriver

Time And Good Fortune by versaphile. Yes those are all porn, heed the tags.

Do You Beta?: I do sometimes

Do You Have a Beta?:  The writing group betas for me mostly these days. beltainefaerie, hums-happily, phipiohsum475, type40consultingdetective primarily.

I’ll tag hums-happily, jazzforthecaptain beltainefaerie dvancecinco and willietheplaidjacket

those ao3 “kudos” emails where someone has gone through and read pretty much all of your stories, one after the other: blessings upon you and your household

don’t authors find that weird though? i don’t do that, just because i always figured it might seem stalkery, going story by story through people’s older work (which of course i do ~all the time~ because awesome fic is addictive)

if people are happy to have the kudos, i will totally start leaving them as i read

I mean, I can only speak for myself here, but no, I don’t find it creepy. Someone I’ve never met going through my old instagram selfies and systematically liking them – creepy. Someone I’ve never met obsessively reading my old fics and liking them – my favorite person of the day. Just MHO.

seeing the same person’s name on a string of kudos for your fics because they’ve obviously read through your back catalogue is one of life’s great joys

xcziel, there’s nothing I like more as a writer than someone who is obviously reading everything.

Well, maybe comments. Yes, on old fic too.

I once (back on lj) had someone comment on every single chapter of a fic I wrote in one evening. It was the most thrilling night of my fanfic career. I didn’t feel creepy in the least.

I love those kudos emails and I’ve even made some friends from that, so no, not creepy in the least. It makes my day

This is the official “Johnlock Roulette” post. Search that tag and you’ll pull up all the previous discussions about this idea, but this is what it boils down to:

Promote your fics in need of more love by putting “Johnlock Roulette” in the tags of FIVE of your COMPLETE fics on AO3. No WIPs. Johnlock must be the leading OTP. Any rating, any word length, any date.

I’ve been trying to tag writers, but keep forgetting people, so PLEASE pass this on to authors, and readers, who’d be interested in participating.

Yes, you could search Sherlock Holmes/John Watson & Complete, or pull up the most recent Johnlock fics, or search by a gazillion different tags, but this is meant to pull in writers and readers who like the idea of finding and promoting hidden gems by current authors amongst the 41,000 Johnlock fics on AO3.

We’ve all read the classics, and we love them to death, but there’s a whole new wave of excellent authors out there, and if you don’t advocate for yourself, who will?

thescienceofjohnlock, thescienceofobsession, snogandagrope, demonicsymphony, moranion, prettyarbitrary, mistyzeo, nana-41175, eventhorizon451, thisprettywren, mitaya, kayjaykayme, 1lostone, justgot1, thursdayplaid, mycapeisplaid, thecircusofme, jinglebellfic , ishipanarmada, ghislainem70

HA, I never get tagged as a writer. My eensy ficlets will feel a bit silly in such exalted company, but why not.  Done.

Tag has been added to: 1) Pashto, 2) Sweet and Tart, 3) Scales and Skin, 4) Technicalities, and 5) Double Occupancy

It was a bit difficult to figure out 5, but hopefully ya’ll like what I contribute. dvancecinco you should signal boost this too
