Writing Fanfiction Is Hard

tiger-in-the-flightdeck:

I was recently chatting with a member of a writer’s group I attend. He was mocking people who write fanfiction- something I do. I had to sit him down and explain a few things to him.

Writing good fanfic is hard work. Not just the writing aspect of it, but the fact that you are writing something from pre-existing material. To be a successful fanfic writer, whether you just write a thousand word smutty ficlet, or novel length pieces, you need to take so many things into account.

You need to be an analytical essayist. It doesn’t matter what you write- you need to be able to portray the characters you are using well. It’s not good enough to rehash the fact that Bilbo ran off on an adventure. You need to explain why. You need to be able to understand what is going through a characters head when they say something, or do something, or just as importantly, when they don’t.

You need a be an amateur psychologist. Why did your version of Sherlock relapse into drugs? Can you explain your choice in making Dean sleep with a teddy bear? What is it about his personality that would make Gojyo feel like he’s been slapped when someone insults him? Not only do you need to understand the characters you are writing, you need to know where they are coming from. It’s alright if you want to just scribble up some smut, but to make it amazing, you need to be able to prove that you know why Dean Winchester would be the most eager to please Sub that ever lived, or why John Watson would never, in a thousand years, take a riding crop to his partner’s face.

You need to be a historian. You want to write a Victorian Era piece? Don’t forget to include the incredible nuances of language and culture. WW2 epic? You better understand the politics of the time. Your fic is set in Ancient Rome? Learn how people swore back then. This last was a mistake I made once. Still trying to live it down.

You need to know your source material backwards and forwards. This is particularly hard for writers from a long running fandom. This doesn’t just mean knowing the scripts, or the appearance of the characters. This means you know that John has his scar on his left shoulder. That Sherlock parts his hair on the left. You have to know which eye Hakkai tore out of his own skull. Which cohort Marcus commanded.

Writing Fanfiction Is Hard.

Bless this post.

I’m a fanfic author. I really, really want people to read my stuff. I do. But at the same time, I don’t. And I certainly don’t want to ask them to. Like “Heeeeey, lookit me, I made story!” because I’ll seem like a pathetic lunatic. I have panic attacks about wanting to be the kind of writer that people get excited to see updated something, but I feel like I’m that “Oh, no, why doesn’t she give up” girl. Ya dig?

Well, anon, all I can tell you is that you don’t know if you don’t try. Don’t try to measure up to anyone else but yourself. Some fics you pour everything into get barely a handful of hits, while others you dash off in an hour might get tons. Also, especially with fanfic, if you’ve got people you trust that are into what you’re writing, don’t be afraid to go “hey, I wrote this thing, would you mind taking a look?” Be willing to listen to *constructive* criticism, but don’t let the negative get you down either.

So whomever you are, I hope you do give it a try. It can be very rewarding!

Insane But Not Alone: Things You May Have Read in Johnlock Fanfic

When you’re editing or working on a fic and you just end up looking at it like:

Looks like for fan work Friday I’ve decided to go with Sherlock and John during “army of ghosts”/”doomsday”. Lets just say I really wanted John Watson vs. a Dalek. And it looks like the Cybermen have taken Sherlock…

Oh look, I wrote another johnlock fic. This one is another first time fic:

Falling Out of Orbit – When John came home early from visiting family, the last thing he expected was to find Sherlock thinking of him this way.

It’s smut and then fluff. Teaser below the cut:

John sighed as he let himself into the flat. He was supposed to be gone all weekend, but a day with Harry was plenty. The comforting smells of Baker Street and the familiar steps eased the flare up in his knee as he made his way up to the flat, moving quietly as it was late and he didn’t want to wake Mrs. Hudson. His thoughts were on his own bed and he stifled a yawn as he opened the door to the flat. It was dark save the light from the street casting eerie shadows on the furniture. He shrugged out of his coat and hung it up, noticing Sherlock’s coat was in its place. Maybe Sherlock was asleep for once.

Turning down the hall, John headed for the bathroom, noticing Sherlock’s door open a crack. He put hand on the bathroom door handle when a low noise caught his attention. Frowning and knowing he was probably violating Sherlock’s privacy, John moved towards the door as quietly as he could. Not like Sherlock respected his privacy that much. Pushing the door just a bit wider, John stared at the sight before him.

Sherlock lay naked on his back, pale skin glowing faintly in the moonlight. His head tossed against the pillows, eyes screwed shut. One elegant hand was wrapped around his cock, stroking slowly. The other hand moved between the cleft of his cheeks. John blushed bright red and started backing up.

“John,” Sherlock moaned, freezing him in place.

Heart thumping against his chest, John closed his eyes and considered his options. He was home early, after all; no doubt Sherlock expected him back tomorrow. He could go on up to bed and pretend this never happened. He could hear Sherlock in the bedroom, shifting against the sheets and moaning quietly above the slick sounds his fingers were producing. The other choice, of course, was to go in and do something about the raging erection pressing against his jeans. There might be regret in the morning, but John had never been one to back down from a challenge.

Because if you comment or like this it’ll motivate me, and I’m a sucker for positive feedback, here’s a teaser of my John Hart with Jack and River fic. I’m going with this is my Tiphys Chronicles universe, so Jack and River are already working together.

River sat across from Jack, sipping a glass of wine and watching the rest of the bar. The crowd was mostly human, but a few other species dotted the room. Her smile brightened as a blonde man walked in. Jack raised an eyebrow and turned to see what had grabbed her attention. He went pale. “Oh God.”

The blonde man gave a feral grin as he flounced over. “Jack!”

“John,” he said with a wince.

“So you know each other,” grinned River.

“Oh we do, but he never mentioned you.” He picked up her hand to kiss it.

River watched him with a small smile. “I’ll take the ring back, thank you.” She held out her hand.

Grinning, John took the ring out of his mouth and placed it in her open hand.

Raising his hand for the waiter, Jack ordered a double.

John leaned over. “If you wanted a double, Jack…”

River laughed. “Oh Jack I like him.”

Jack threw back the rest of his drink. “You can have him.”

John leaned over, hand on Jack’s thigh. “Come now, more than enough to share.”

Jack pulled away. “You’re wearing the lip gloss.”

“Come on, not like you’d stay dead very long.”

River raised an eyebrow. “He does know you. What brand do you use?”

John turned back to her, intrigued. “Paranthian. What do you use?”

“I find Halver’s does a better job.”

“Really? I don’t think that moisturizes as well…”

Jack took their animated discussion over types and brands of paralytic lips gloss as a chance to escape to the bar.

Challenge 3 Master List!

letswritesherlock:

Here it is, folks: the Master List for Challenge 3! Get your tissues ready because this one is an angst-fest. I think this may have been our most popular challenge so far and I love seeing how many people are giving fic writing a try for the first time.

To all the newcomers and the veterans: Amazing job! And I apologize once again for it taking so long to get this master list up.
