Dear asshole teenagers of tumblr,

People over 50 are allowed to like stuff and have fun and fall in love and have sex

People ages 40????? OVER 40???? HAVE FUN?????????????? FANdom for OLd pepple??¿¿„,
Aha, sorry, I just wanted to be snarky. But really, it just baffles me when I see people all SHOCKED AND AMAZED that folks over 25 would be in fandom, never mind folks in their 30s, 40s and 50s and 60s+. It’s like when Benedict Cumberbatch does something silly and everyone’s like “but he’s supposed to be 37!” as though you can never have fun or be silly and goofy and nerdy once you hit 35.
My daughter gave me such a lecture the other day about how I’m too old to be a fangirl and be on tumblr.
mine says I am too old for johnlock. no one told me about the age limit.
My SIX YEAR OLD mocked me about watching The Office last weekend. “You’re always watching Martin movies, Mommy. You think he’s soooooo cute.”
Six.years.old.
Goddamned whippersnappers.
Okay, I’m 18 and frankly I think it’s MUCH BETTER to have intergenerational representation because we all learn from each other and provide different perspectives. This translates to real life. For example, I’m the only youth member on the board of a women’s group and I definitely have a different outlook and perspective on what youth are looking for than the other board members—I spend a good amount of time in each meeting making it clear that youth want opportunities to take action and make choices just as much as adults; I make it clear that youth learn more when they’re with mixed ages, because I’ve learned SO much from people of all generations (to clarify, we plan events and there’s always debate as to whether or by youth should have separate activities).
AND I could go on about how all literature and by extension TV shows are really just devices by which we tap into our inner need for deeper understanding and how AMAZING it is to be part of a fandom that appeals so widely but…you get the gist.
Fellow youths: Value your opportunity to interact with people of multiple generations. Cool things happens when people of multiple generations collaborate outside of hierarchal systems such as schools and youth are given the chance to work ALONGSIDE their elders. Everybody learns, and it’s awesome. And that’s why, even though I’m attending college this year, I’m going to do my best to run again for the board. We do important work, and I get to hang out and talk with really interesting people—none of whom are under 50.
a whippersnapper—proving that people are just people, no matter how old or young.
