I have a thought about ‘kill your darlings.’ There seems to be a general notion out there in the ether that the phrase means, ‘Hunt down every sentence or image you really love and cut it down like a pernicious weed.’ That, my dears, is bullshit.
“In my opinion, what it really means is, ‘If you’re rewriting a whole scene just so that a paragraph or conversation you’re in love with will work, and it still kind of doesn’t, maybe it doesn’t really belong in this story and you should print it out and put it in a lovely, decorative folder labelled DARLINGS to read on those days when you hate every sentence you’re writing.’
Headcanon: What you think happened, based on the characters, settings, storylines and all reasonable extrapolations thereof.
Heartcanon: What you feel ought to have happened, quite divorced from rationality or sense.
Soulcanon: What you know happened, deep down in your soul, regardless of what anyone says. Including the creators of canon, themselves.
Crotchcanon: What your gonads wish had happened, or, alternatively, what turns you on.
Oh my goodness.
Okay, this seems like a fun basis for a meme: “Send me a character, and I’ll give you one of each” – a canon fact, a headcanon fact, a heartcanon fact, a soulcanon fact and a crotchcanon fact.” 🙂
Since Pokémon Go started dominating our lives last week, it’s had some surprising impacts. People are feeling strange sensations in their legs as they actually walk around, and players are discovering, err, interesting new things around their cities.
But it turns out there might also be unexpected benefits for people suffering from mental health conditions.
As psychologist John M. Grohol reports on PsychCentral, users are taking to social media to report an unexpected improvement in their depression and anxiety as a result of playing the game.
