Jolto headcanons
At the Jolto meetup at 221b Con, we passed around a notebook for headcanons. The results are as follows.
After John returned to London, while Sholto was still deployed, John would pick up used books with meaningful inscriptions to send to him.
When they’re alone, sometimes James dresses John in his uniform and will obey any command Major Watson gives him.
During leave, John drags Sholto to bars for dancing and delights in ensuring he is covered in glitter by the end of the night. He of course helps Sholto wash it all off the next morning.
When John was a lowly crow, he’d always request clean up duty in the officers’ quarters, in hopes of catching a glimpse of the elusive Captain Sholto. Years later when he was assigned to the Major’s regiment, he had to fight the urge to grin like a loon every time he was in the Major’s company. Sholto noticed, of course, and took the suppressed smirk as insolence and reprimanded Watson… with cleaning duties in his quarters.
John picked up his love of plaid from Sholto’s wardrobe & not the other way around.
Sholto bought John the watch he wears from a flea market on leave. It has two times, which John always keeps set to Afghanistan and London time, long after he is returned home.
James loves to cook. He taught John how to cook the “thing with peas.”

Thing I saw on Tumblr recently, reacting to a great picture of Mark Hamill hugging Lupita Nyong’o: “I love that Mark Hamill has just unilaterally decided Luke is everybody’s father, and also gay. :D”
To which I can only say this…
It’s even better than that.
If you check out Hamill’s full quote, here’s what you’ll read:
“Fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school…I’m afraid to come out. Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is.”
And, of course, that works for more than just gay. Gay, straight, bi, pan, ace, demi, trans, cis…anything at all. If you think Luke is, of course Luke is.
Even things you might not be able to think Luke is, Star Wars finds a way. Is it possible for Luke Skywalker to be a cis woman? Sounds like a stretch, I have to imagine. But then…as many people have established, in early drafts of the screenplay, the character occupying Luke’s place was a woman. Who’s to say that isn’t as much “Luke” as anything else?
The one thing Luke always is, through everything, is the one we look up to. That’s why it’s so important to the people writing in to Hamill. “If Luke can be gay,” they are saying, “it can be OK. I can face my fear. I can see Luke as someone to emulate, to be like. Luke can give me strength.”
No matter what you are, Luke can be you.
And that’s when you realize what Luke really is. And of course it’s what Luke is. What Luke always was, from the beginning.
Luke Skywalker is the Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Including yours.
Luke Skywalker is the Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Including yours.
My heart did a little thing. YES THIS.
Here’s what fanfiction understands that the Puppies don’t: inversion and subversion don’t ruin the story – they just give you new ways to tell it, and new tools to tell it with. Take a platonic relationship and make it romantic; there’s a story in that. Take a romantic relationship and make it platonic; there’s a story in that, too. Take a human and make her a werewolf; take a werewolf and make him human. Don’t try and sidle up on hurt/comfort like it’s something you’re ashamed to be indulging in; embrace the tropes until you have their mastery. Take a gang of broken souls surviving the apocalypse and make them happy in high school; take a bunch of funny, loving high school kids and shove them in the apocalypse. Like Archimedes, fanfic writers find the soul, the essence of what makes the characters real, and use it as a fulcrum on which to pivot entire worlds, with inversion/subversion as their lever of infinite length.
Tumblr mobile is doing this annoying thing where turning off notifications isn’t sticking. So if I go into the app for any reason, notifications turn on wether I want them to or not. I can turn them off. But the minute I go into the app again they come back on.
Oh thank fuck, someone else noticed.
Doing it to you too?
