I know it’s not the exact same thing, but I laughed when I saw the Doctor Strange poster because all I could think is someone really likes to take dramatic photos of Benedict from behind.

The swooping I can actually explain! Americans read left-to-right, so for us, when we look at an image, we look from the left to the right. Things swooping from left to right looks much more natural to us. If the cape/coat were swooping the right, it would have a jagged feel rather than a smooth feel. We would hit the rough, uneven edge of his body first, in other words, instead of the smooth side. Now this can certainly be used for an effect, but in these cases, smoothness was obviously the intention.
