OK, so The Poison Giant post on John’s blog is one I think about a lot because we have this obvious unresolved plot dangler—someone is trying to kill John and Sherlock, they never find out why, they end up ignoring it—and I can’t decide if this ties into something we’ve already seen on the show or if it’s foreshadowing something that’s about to happen.
I mean, are there any characters we’ve already met who would be trying to kill John and Sherlock just before the former’s wedding? Is the next villain of the season the one trying to kill them? And what’s up with the pearls? Why? WTF is this?
I mean Sherlock is more interested in “The Elephant in the Room” than he is in the fact that someone is trying to kill them. He is so distracted by the elephant in the room (his feelings for John and/or John’s feelings for him), that he’s completely disregarding as irrelevant and boring, the very obvious threat right in front of them (Liar, Guardian, Secret Tattoo). I would say this is foreshadowing about Mary, but I could be wrong.
The pearls ( and this whole case/blog entry) are a reference/parallel to “The Sign of Four” where Miss Mary Morstan started receiving one pearl of exceptional worth in the post every year for six years. They were part of the treasure of ‘Agra’.
