feminist thor is the best pass it on
The fact that any of you get any sort of enjoyment out of this is paramount to how low the bar is set when it comes to writing.
There is nothing redeemable about the writing in this issue and you should be insulted not only as reader’s but as feminist if you are one.
This is 50 shades of grey bad.
Nothing redeeming? Oh I beg to differ. This is the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. My sides are in orbit.
Ok so I’m well aware that I don’t know anything about writing, so could someone please explain to me what’s so bad about it? (if you’re thinking “because it’s pandering” then don’t bother answering)
Okay, so I’ve only just got around to reading Thor: Goddess of Thunder #5 yesterday, because I was waiting to get the physical in my local Comic Book shop but I was busy that week (They ended up being sold out so I had to get the digital anyway) but I don’t see the issue in this page?
I agree with the criticism that the story has gone away from being about her discovering herself and believing herself to be the Goddess of Thunder, to trying to enhance Thor’s story line. However, I feel like it needs to be put into the wider context of the story as a whole.
Thor has been a man for decades. That is the way, there are still a lot of nay-sayers out there who are angry and refusing to accept that Thor is now a woman. This is a running issue. We’re seeing people telling her she’s not really Thor. She’s not “Lady Thunderstrike” or “She-Thor”. She’s Thor, and that’s what’s being tackled in the story line.
This criticism being said? It’s the kind of criticism I’ve heard from people outside of the female-friendly corner of Tumblr. They’re asserting who she is in this one. Thor 2 and 3 were her issues of self discovery and assurance. Now, she has to prove herself to the world. Establish herself as the Goddess of Thunder, and The Odinson has to help her out on that one as well. We’ve got Odin trying to kill her for taking up the role of a man, he’s trying to belittle Freyja’s rule and demolish her reforms. He can’t handle a woman being in a man’s rule! The Odinson is trying to help her out, and figure out who she is. I’m hoping for a big pay-off on that one.
Now, I’m not an expert on Thor. I haven’t read God of Thunder, though I have all intention of doing so once I get Ultimate Back for the Holidays (Seriously, trying to do an art degree and have unlimited access to decades of comics and story lines? Not a good mix.) But I still expect to be excited to find out who she is, and why she’s hiding her identity.
And to compare this to 50 shades? I’m quite frankly insulted by that! Just. How can you compare these two things???? How!! You’re saying this is as bad as the romanticisation of Domestic Abuse? As bad as an full HD Imax smile? Or anything happening down /there/ with her Inner Goddess doing a tap-dance?
Sure, Thor Goddess of Thunder is no Ms Marvel. It’s no Hawkeye – but it’s not as awful as it’s being painted as being! They’re making sure that the world accepts her as Thor. That’s going to take time but it’s happening. I’ve high hopes for Issue 6. The foundations are laid and I’m waiting to see what’s going to be built upon them.
