Historically, whenever young women are interested in a form of media,
\n we like to tell them it is bad for them and that they are bad for
\nliking it \u2014 unless the media goes mainstream, in which case it becomes
\nno longer feminine and hence okay. Novels are dangerous and cause
\ninsanity, until they become classics worthy of being studied in college.
\n Beatlemania<\/a> is the province of \u201cthe dull, the idle, the failures,\u201c until the Beatles become a band that everyone loves. <\/p>\n

Young women are so attacked for loving the media they love that it is
\n a radical act for a young woman to love something unashamedly. <\/b>And
\ntransformative fandom is the most radical act of all, because it
\nreverses that \u201clady thing to respectable thing\u201d process.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
