Given the aging population in Canada, we want to<br \/>\ncontinue to build upon those efforts.<\/p>\n<p> The current generation of<br \/>\n older LGBTQ people have experienced a lifetime of discrimination due to<br \/>\n their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression and<br \/>\nthey face very specific challenges as they age:<\/p>\n<p> &#8211; They are less likely to seek health care when they need it;<\/p>\n<p>\n &#8211; They often do not disclose their sexual orientation and\/or gender<br \/>\nidentity and expression to their care providers for fear of<br \/>\ndiscrimination;<\/p>\n<p> &#8211; They report more feelings of isolation from their communities; <\/p>\n<p>\n &#8211; They are at a higher risk for negative health outcomes later in life,<br \/>\n including depression, suicide, substance abuse, smoking, etc. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> (Brotman &amp; Ryan, 2008)<\/p>\n<p>\n The 519 Education and Training Team offer workshops and resources that<br \/>\nsupport safe, welcoming and inclusive care environments for LGBTQ older<br \/>\npeople. The training supports organizations and individuals to<br \/>\nunderstand the needs of older LGBTQ people.
