‘A baby cannot provide … consent’: Calif. lawmakers denounce infant intersex surgeries<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe California State Legislature approved a resolution on Tuesday denouncing medically unnecessary surgeries for intersex children.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIntersex children should be free to choose whether to undergo life-altering surgeries that irreversibly \u2014 and sometimes irreparably \u2014 cause harm,\u201d the resolution states.<\/p>\n

SCR 110<\/a> was introduced by Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat whose district includes San Francisco, and it was supported by Equality California, a statewide LGBTQ advocacy group, and interACT, an intersex youth advocacy organization.<\/p>\n

In a statement provided to NBC News, Wiener said the resolution \u201crecognizes that California\u2019s intersex community is a part of our state\u2019s diversity and should be embraced.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese surgeries should be performed only with informed consent by the person whose life will be permanently impacted,\u201d Wiener stated. \u201cA baby cannot provide that consent.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThese surgeries can have significant negative impacts on people\u2019s lives, particularly if the gender chosen by the physician and parents is different from the child\u2019s ultimate gender identity,\u201d Wiener continued.<\/p>\n
