All I want to know is, how much time and money went into this research when you could\u2019ve just asked trans folks how they felt for free<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>okay, A: they <b><i>did<\/i>\u00a0<\/b>ask. they <i><b>did<\/b><\/i>\u00a0listen. like\u2026 I don\u2019t wanna exaggerate here but\u00a0\u201casking trans kids how they feel\u201d is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaacap.com\/article\/S0890-8567%2816%2931941-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\">literally the entire study<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cchildren (9\u201314 years old) and their parents completed measurements of depression and anxiety (n = 63 transgender children, n = 63 controls, n = 38 siblings). Children (6\u201314 years old; n = 116 transgender children, n = 122 controls, n = 72 siblings) also reported on their self-worth\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>and B: this isn\u2019t the kind of study researchers do because\u00a0\u201coh gosh we just aren\u2019t really sure yet, we really just don\u2019t know\u201d, they do it because cis people have been sitting on their asses for decades ignoring anything that\u2019s not an Official Scientific Study, so they said\u00a0\u201cokay fuck you, here\u2019s the study, you\u2019re wrong, now do something helpful or shut the hell up\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>#Thank you #I\u2019m super over this smug \u2018yeah we knew that\u2019 response to studies #I mean I get the impulse to go \u2019\u2026yes and water is wet thanks captain obvious\u2019 #But the thing is that you *need* this kind of hard data in order to act on it #Which is actually a good thing #BC \u2018we don\u2019t need no stinkin science\u2019 policies based on \u2018we just Know This ok don\u2019t ask for our data just shut up and do it\u2019 #Is how you get anti choice laws based in pseudoscience and religious belief #And climate change not being addressed in law and policy #Besides. Just think how satisfying it is to throw hard data in some asshole\u2019s face to counter their claims.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Scientist: Treating trans people like people is the way to make them happy.<br \/>Cis Person: Yeah but\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026how do we KNOW?<br \/>Scientist: *sighs* can I have a grant to study it?<br \/>Cis Person: Sure.<br \/>Scientist: Hey, Trans Person, would you be happier if people treated you like people?<br \/>Trans Person: Of course.<br \/>Scientists:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/22cc91fb72e9fd62820ad93668e3d291\/tumblr_inline_p5g09tMhP61qh5r79_540.png\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Specifically, this study can now be used in medical offices and courtrooms. A trans kid\u2019s parent can take this study to their bigoted local doctor and say\u00a0\u201csee, this is why you should either treat my kid or give us a referral to a doctor who will.\u201d Or this can be taken into various legal proceedings about name changes, birth certificate changes\/corrections, and custody hearings where it becomes necessary to prove to a judge that yes, helping the kid transition (and perhaps leaving the kid with the parent\/guardian who is willing to help) is what is best for the kid.<\/p>\n<p>These kinds of studies are <i>exactly what we want, folks.<\/i>\u00a0Don\u2019t knock it just because it\u2019s something you already knew.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<b><i>These kinds of studies are exactly what we want, folks.
