You do not have to apologize for the books you choose to read.<\/p>\n

At all.\u00a0 To anyone.\u00a0 You owe nobody any explanations; you need no excuse or \u201cgood reason\u201d to be reading the book.<\/p>\n

You do not have to be ashamed for wanting to read \u201cbad\u201d books.\u00a0 You wanna read Twilight<\/i>?\u00a0 We got Twilight<\/i>.\u00a0 Need a banal, cookie-cutter-plot mystery or thriller?\u00a0 <\/i>Those are always fun.\u00a0 Our regulars check them out by the towering stack.\u00a0 Ask Betty for recommendations; she\u2019s read them all.\u00a0 50 Shades of Oh Fucking No<\/i>?\u00a0 We\u2019ve got it, we even got it in large print.\u00a0 Have fun.\u00a0 Check out the rest of our porn too.\u00a0 Oh, and the sex manuals are a MUST if you want to \u201cexperiment\u201d yourself.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid to ask; they\u2019re here for a reason.<\/p>\n

Want to read a book written by a huge asshole everyone hates and agree was a monster?\u00a0 Yeah, we have those.\u00a0 No, we don\u2019t think you\u2019re an asshole for wanting to know what was actually written in there, or judging things for yourself.<\/p>\n

You are not too old for Diary of a Wimpy Kid<\/i>, The Babysitter\u2019s Club<\/i>, or Captain Underpants<\/i>.\u00a0 You are not too young for Sherlock Holmes.\u00a0 <\/i>There\u2019s nothing wrong with a boy reading The Princess Academy <\/i>or Sweet Valley High.\u00a0 <\/i>There\u2019s nothing wrong with a girl being into The Hardy Boys or Artemis Fowl <\/i>instead.<\/p>\n

You do not have to pull the shame face and offer me an excuse when you check out your books.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care if I got so angry at that book I threw it against a wall when I read it: you have the right to read it, and enjoy it if it\u2019s enjoyable for you.\u00a0 THAT\u2019S WHY THE LIBRARY HAS IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.\u00a0 If we only stocked pure, unproblematic literature everyone approved of, by authors of unquestionable virtue, we wouldn\u2019t have any books at all.\u00a0 Or music.\u00a0 Or movies.\u00a0 It would be utterly fucking boring.\u00a0 And it certainly wouldn\u2019t be a library.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
