a moment to recognize everyone who was there and everyone who made it possible for him to do what he does. If you want a perfect example of why he is so fondly remembered and such a great person, it\u2019s tough to find a better one than this.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m going to need y\u2019all to stop putting the stuff on my dash and reducing me to a pile of tears. I swear Mr. Rogers just instantly turns on the faucet for me.<\/p>\n<p>Just look at the faces on the audience. You can tell how moved they are to think of the people who helped them along the way. Maybe they were thinking of a grandmother or a sibling or a best friend or kindly neighbor. He made that moment so real for all of them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cEarly this year, when television handed him its highest honor, he responded by telling television\u2014 gently, of course\u2014 to just <i>shut up<\/i><br \/>\n for once, and television listened. He had already won his third Daytime<br \/>\n Emmy, and now he went onstage to accept Emmy\u2019s Lifetime Achievement<br \/>\nAward, and there, in front of all the soap-opera stars and talk-show<br \/>\nsinceratrons, in front of all the jutting man-tanned jaws and jutting<br \/>\nsaltwater bosoms, he made his small bow and said into the microphone,<br \/>\n\u2018All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you<br \/>\njust take, along with me, <i>ten seconds<\/i> to think of the people<br \/>\nwho have helped you become who you are\u2026 Ten seconds of silence.\u2019 And<br \/>\nthen he lifted his wrist, and looked at the audience, and looked at his<br \/>\nwatch, and said softly, \u2018I\u2019ll watch the time,\u2019 and there was, at first, a<br \/>\n small whoop from the crowd, a giddy, strangled hiccup of laughter, as<br \/>\npeople realized that <i>he wasn\u2019t kidding<\/i>, that Mister Rogers was not some convenient eunuch but rather a <i>man<\/i>,<br \/>\n an authority figure who actually expected them to do what he asked\u2026<br \/>\nand so they did. One second, two seconds, three seconds\u2026 and now the<br \/>\njaws clenched, and the bosoms heaved, and the mascara ran, and the tears<br \/>\n fell upon the beglittered gathering like rain leaking down a crystal<br \/>\nchandelier, and Mister Rogers finally looked up from his watch and said,<br \/>\n \u2018May God be with you\u2019 to all his vanquished children.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/tv\/a27134\/can-you-say-hero-esq1198\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Junod, <i>Esquire<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I love the idea of Mr. Rogers being an authority figure you wouldn\u2019t dare disobey, not out of fear but out of pure, overflowing, deep respect.
