Photo: Brendan Smialowski\/AFP\/Getty Images\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/npr.tumblr.com\/post\/179530585396\/eleven-people-were-killed-on-saturday-when-a\" class=\"tumblr_blog\" target=\"_blank\">npr<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Eleven people were killed on Saturday when a gunman entered Pittsburgh\u2019s Tree of Life synagogue and opened fire on the congregants. The victims ranged in age from 54 to 97; eight were men, three were women. Two of them were brothers, and two were a married couple.<\/p>\n<p>Chuck Diamond was a rabbi at Tree of Life until about a year ago, and he remains a member of the community, living just around the corner from the synagogue. He knew many of the victims.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThese are wonderful people, good souls, who were just coming to synagogue as the usually did,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/10\/28\/661520354\/synagogues-former-rabbi-on-pittsburgh-s-jewish-community\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> NPR on Sunday. \u201cSynagogue was just getting started and mostly elderly people who come there are there at the beginning, and you could count on them every week for coming. \u2026 It\u2019s such a crime that their lives were taken from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The names of the victims were released on Sunday morning by the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner. Here are some of their stories, as we learn them.<\/p>\n<p><b>Rose Mallinger<\/b>, 97, of Squirrel Hill, was the oldest of the victims.<\/p>\n<p>Diamond told NPR that Rose \u201cwas in her 90s, but she was one of the younger ones among us, I have to tell you, in terms of her spirit. Rose was wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Daniel Stein<\/b>, 71, lived in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He is the former president of the New Light Congregation, a Conservative synagogue that held services at Tree of Life.<\/p>\n<p>He was remembered for his kindness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always willing to help anybody,\u201d his nephew Steven Halle <a href=\"https:\/\/triblive.com\/local\/allegheny\/14221475-74\/squirrel-hill-shooting-victim-dan-stein-remembered-as-a-kind-soul\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> TribLIVE, formerly the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. \u201cHe was somebody that everybody liked, very dry sense of humor and recently had a grandson who loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Melvin Wax<\/b>, 88, also of Squirrel Hill, was a remembered as a pillar of the New Light Congregation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was such a kind, kind person,\u201d his friend and fellow congregant Myron Snider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/68ace87d05b94a328109937c1885937e\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> The Associated Press. \u201cWhen my daughters were younger, they would go to him, and he would help them with their federal income tax every year. Never charged them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe and I used to, at the end of services, try to tell a joke or two to each other. Most of the time they were clean jokes. Most of the time. I won\u2019t say all the time. But most of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Snider said Wax was a bit hard of hearing, and unfailingly attended Friday, Saturday, and Sunday services, filling in at nearly every role if someone didn\u2019t show up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a sweet, sweet guy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/29a434941a0ecadfc054cfe4a7e5cc03\/tumblr_inline_phbvx3YiU21qdq6i4_540.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><b>Jerry Rabinowitz<\/b>, 66, of Edgewood Borough, was a family doctor.<\/p>\n<p>He practiced in a \u201csmall, cozy office in Pittsburgh\u2019s Bloomfield neighborhood,\u201d TribLIVE reporter Ben Schmitt <a href=\"https:\/\/triblive.com\/local\/allegheny\/14222874-74\/jerry-rabinowitz-kind-gentle-doctor-among-the-victims-in-pittsburgh-synagogue-mass\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> in a personal remembrance. Rabinowitz was his father\u2019s doctor, and his own.<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt recalled how his father became ill on a trip to India, and called back to Rabinowitz in Pittsburgh for advice. The doctor called his father every day for the rest of his trip to check in on his health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like I was in such competent, caring hands,\u201d Schmitt\u2019s father said. \u201cSuch a kind and gentle man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rabinowitz also was the personal physician to former Allegheny County Deputy District Attorney Lawrence Claus, who <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburgh.cbslocal.com\/2018\/10\/28\/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a> a statement on Sunday remembering him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Jerry Rabinowitz \u2026 was truly a trusted confidant and healer who could always be counted upon to provide sage advice whenever he was consulted on medical matters, usually providing that advice with a touch of genuine humor,\u201d said Claus, <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburgh.cbslocal.com\/2018\/10\/28\/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> CBS affiliate KDKA. \u201cHe had a truly uplifting demeanor, and as a practicing physician he was among the very best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Cecil Rosenthal<\/b>, 59, and <b>David Rosenthal<\/b>, 54, were brothers who shared an apartment in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Raye Coffey, a close friend and former neighbor of the Rosenthals\u2019 parents, <a href=\"https:\/\/triblive.com\/local\/allegheny\/14223259-74\/synagogue-victims-cecil-and-david-rosenthal-remembered-as-loving-inseparable\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a>TribLIVE that the Rosenthals spent a lot of time in her house when they were younger. She said the brothers faced mental challenges and were fixtures at Tree of Life, where Cecil was a greeter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCecil was always a big brother. He was very warm and very loving. Whenever he would see us, he would always say, \u2018Hi, Coffeys!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid was quieter,\u201d she said. \u201cBut both were \u2026 to die like this is horrendous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ACHIEVA, an organization that works with people with disabilities said that the brothers were well-respected members of its community. Chris Schopf, who runs the group\u2019s residential programs, said the brothers never missed a Saturday at Tree of Life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they were here they would tell you that is where they were supposed to be,\u201d Schopf said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achieva.info\/our-hearts-are-heavy\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a>. \u201cCecil\u2019s laugh was infectious. David was so kind and had such a gentle spirit. Together, they looked out for one another. They were inseparable. Most of all, they were kind, good people with a strong faith and respect for everyone around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Bernice Simon<\/b>, 84, and <b>Sylvan Simon<\/b>, 86, of Wilkinsburg were remembered by neighbors as sweet, kind, and generous.<\/p>\n<p>They were married at the Tree of Life synagogue in December 1956, <a href=\"https:\/\/triblive.com\/local\/allegheny\/14223296-74\/synagogue-victims-bernice-and-sylvan-simon-theyve-been-together-forever\" target=\"_blank\">according <\/a>to TribLIVE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA loving couple and they\u2019ve been together forever,\u201d longtime friend and neighbor Michael Stepaniak told the news site. \u201cI hope they didn\u2019t suffer much and I miss them terribly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Joyce Fienberg<\/b>, 75, lived in Pittsburgh\u2019s Oakland neighborhood, and grew up in Toronto. She had two sons and was remembered as a proud grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[She was] the most amazing and giving person,\u201d her brother, Bob Libman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/pittsburgh-shooting-toronto-victim-joyce-fienberg-1.4881736\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the CBC.<\/p>\n<p>Fienberg was a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh\u2019s Learning Research and Development Center for more than 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pitt.lrdc\/posts\/1774341376026319\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a> on Sunday, the center called her \u201ca cherished friend\u201d and \u201can engaging, elegant, and warm person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaea Leinhardt, professor emerita at Pitt, called Fienberg her best friend and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2018\/national\/victims-of-the-pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\">told <\/a>The Washington Post that she had a way of putting teachers at ease when she visited their classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was very intellectual,\u201d Leinhardt said. \u201cBut also people would just always open up to her in a very easy way. She was an ideal observer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her husband, internationally celebrated statistician Stephen Fienberg, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/news\/stories\/archives\/2016\/december\/obituary-fienberg.html\" target=\"_blank\">died in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Leinhardt told the Post that Fienberg had been especially involved at Tree of Life since her husband\u2019s death. \u201cI just can\u2019t say how terribly sad I am that this person isn\u2019t in the world anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Richard Gottfried<\/b>, 65, of Ross Township, shared <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburghteeth.com\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\">a dentistry practice<\/a> with his wife.<\/p>\n<p>The two met as dental students at the University of Pittsburgh, the Post reports, and they volunteered with Catholic Charities\u2019 dental clinic. He was said to be an avid runner and had been going to services at Tree of Life more often recently.<\/p>\n<p><b>Irving Younger<\/b>, 69, ran a real estate business in Squirrel Hill for many years, and was also a youth football and baseball coach.<\/p>\n<p>Tina Prizner, who lived next door to Younger in the Mt. Washington neighborhood, remembered him as \u201cthe most wonderful dad and grandpa\u201d and as a devoted member of his congregation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went every day.
