Think about it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDeath Panel\u201d is an easy manipulation.\u00a0 Know why?\u00a0 Because death is FUCKING SCARY!\u00a0 For everyone involved &#8211; patient and family.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Know what else?\u00a0 Hospice care is FREE for Medicare and Medicaid patients.\u00a0 And it\u2019s typically covered by private insurance at a high percentage (and realistically, if you qualify for hospice care, you\u2019ve likely already met your deductible).\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Here are some (American) hospice facts:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; hospice care is for anyone who receives a prognosis of six months of life or fewer.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; hospice care isn\u2019t just for cancer or dementia patients.\u00a0 Any life-ending diagnosis qualifies for hospice care.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; hospice care isn\u2019t just for elderly.\u00a0 Again, anyone who has a life expectancy of six months or fewer should quality for hospice care.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; every licensed hospice provider is required by federal law to use a team approach.\u00a0 The team includes the medical director (who is an MD), nurses (RNs and LPNs), CNAs, social workers (MSWs), chaplains, and volunteers.\u00a0 These people are <b>death experts<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; the RN case managers see everything.\u00a0 EVERYTHING.\u00a0 Every imaginable living condition, every insane family dynamic, and every conceivable physical condition.\u00a0 They know wounds.\u00a0 They know symptoms.\u00a0 They know pain.\u00a0 Can\u2019t poop?\u00a0 Ask a hospice nurse.\u00a0 I guarantee they\u2019ll have a dozen recommendations, including their own secret recipe for a \u201cbrown bomb\u201d or \u201ccrappuccino\u201d or \u201cloosey goosey\u201d.\u00a0 They all taste like garbage, but YOU WILL POOP!\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; hospice CNAs are maybe the most gentle people on the planet.\u00a0 They care for a patient like they\u2019re caring for their own grandparent.\u00a0 They\u2019ll wipe your butt and wash your armpits.\u00a0 They\u2019ll hold your hand and cry with you.\u00a0 They\u2019ll sing to you or paint your nails or trim your ear hair and they\u2019ll do all of it without an ounce of judgement.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; hospice social workers know death.\u00a0 Lots of families hear social worker and think family drama.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what hospice social workers do.\u00a0 (Though they do that too, when necessary.)\u00a0 They help with anything not directly medical.\u00a0 Moving the patient from the hospital to home?\u00a0 The social worker can help with logistics.\u00a0 Questions about money?\u00a0 The social worker probably knows, or knows where to send you for answers.\u00a0 Need help with a living will or DNR?\u00a0 Ask the social worker.\u00a0 Terrified about what the final moments might be like?\u00a0 The social worker can walk you through what to expect. \u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; a patient or family can choose hospice care at any point, whether immediately after receiving a diagnosis or within hours of death.\u00a0 Obviously, the longer the hospice team is involved, the better they can guide the patient and family along the journey.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; hospice care can be revoked at any time, should the patient or family choose to seek active treatment or discontinue the care.\u00a0 Hospice care can be reinstated as well &#8211; it\u2019s typically just a matter of paperwork.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; here\u2019s what Medicare and Medicaid cover for free<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the team home visits (home is considered wherever the patient currently lives, whether it\u2019s the hospital, a long-term care facility, or their actual family home)<\/li>\n<li>the medications needed to treat the symptoms of the qualifying diagnosis, plus the pain management meds and anything else the medical director prescribes\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>supplies &#8211; bed pads, diapers, gloves, bandages, etc<\/li>\n<li>equipment &#8211; hospital bed, oxygen, lifts, etc<\/li>\n<li>room and board isn\u2019t covered if a patient is in a facility &#8211; that cost falls to the family.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Choosing hospice care isn\u2019t giving up.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t a death panel.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t euthanasia.\u00a0 Choosing hospice care is acknowledging the reality that time is limited and that the patient deserves expert, specialized end-of-life care.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Hospice care is a choice.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that surprising that Republicans are anti-choice.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rebloging for the American followers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>cricketcat9: moreorlesme: rallyforbernie: This is what Republicans try to demonize for political gain.
