The beatings were nothing new, but this one had been particularly bad. He winced as he walked up the steps and unlocked the door, letting himself in. Mrs. Hudson was out doing the shopping, so he was able to go upstairs without her fussing.<\/p>\n<p>However, getting past his fathers was another story altogether. He hadn\u2019t made it an inch past the door when\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus, what the hell happened to you?\u201d John cried out, pulling his son in through the door and sitting him down. \u201cWho did this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, it\u2019s nothing, really\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But John was having none of it. He called Sherlock, who came out of his \u201claboratory\u201d looking quite cross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn, I\u2019m in the middle of\u2014\u201d He stopped, taking in his son\u2019s swollen face, the bruising around the eye, the bleeding lip, the scrapes along the jaw and the wrists. \u201cWho\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just asking him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I was\u00a0<em>saying\u00a0<\/em>that it was <em>nothing<\/em>,\u201d Hamish said forcefully, moving to get up, but John wouldn\u2019t let him. \u201cDad, really. It\u2019s nothing that I can\u2019t handle. Can I please go now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John shook his head and sat down in front of his son. \u201cNo, you\u2019re not leaving until you tell us who did this to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamish merely averted his eyes and wiped the blood that had been trickling out of his nose with the sleeve of his jumper. All he wanted at that moment was a hot shower.<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock walked forward until he was standing right in front of Hamish, his eyes sparking with ill restrained anger. \u201cWho was it? Was it Ben Hawkins? Ted Whishaw?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamish didn\u2019t answer for a second, staring down at Sherlock\u2019s shoes, taking in the acid stains at the tips. \u201cThey said\u2026it was because my parents are gay,\u201d he said softly, hoping that they hadn\u2019t heard. It was the last thing he wanted them to hear. That they were the cause of his weekly beatings.<\/p>\n<p>When he looked up, he knew that they had. Both men exchanged weary glances. John looked as if he had had the air had been knocked out of him. Sherlock stooped so that his face was level with that of his son, but he didn\u2019t have anything to say. He didn\u2019t know <em>what<\/em> to say.<\/p>\n<p>John broke the silence after a minute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo\u2026no don\u2019t. It\u2019s not your fault,\u201d Hamish said after a moment, looking them both in the eye. \u201cIt never was. I wouldn\u2019t have it any other way. It\u2019s better than\u2026\u201d but here he stopped. He never liked talking about the foster home. The memories he had of the place weren\u2019t the most pleasant of things to look back on. He let out a small laugh. \u201cDo you know what they said? They said that I was a garbage child. I was thrown out and only fags would want to keep me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John flinched slightly at the word, but Sherlock remained stoic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told them that at least my parents\u00a0<em>wanted<\/em>\u00a0me. You two chose me because you <em>wanted<\/em> me. No one <em>forced<\/em> you to get me. No one kept you from giving me back or getting rid of me. None of the other kids get that. I told him at least I didn\u2019t have to worry about my dad shagging the secretary from work, which got to Ben. His dad\u2019s been cheating, it\u2019s so\u00a0<em>obvious. <\/em>I could see it plain as day when he came to pick Ben up last week. His shirt sleeves were rumpled, which isn\u2019t necessary for<em>\u2014<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John\u2019s mouth quirked upward slightly at the way his tone quickened as he gave a detailed deconstruction of the wrinkles of Mr. Hawkins\u2019 shirtsleeves.<\/p>\n<p>Hamish shook his head. He wasn\u2019t going to waste time talking about Ben Hawkins or his dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not an obligation, like <em>he<\/em> is,\u201d Hamish said, picking at his torn jeans. \u201cI was a choice.
