The first time I saw this scene, it was another of those \u201cgoddamn<\/em> this show is going to get under my skin in That Way" moments; because it\u2019s almost delivered like Sherlock is intentionally making the observation aloud<\/em> for John\u2019s benefit.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the kind of brief thought you\u2019d usually hear him bother to articulate. It\u2019s out of character, and when John immediately picks up on that\u2014Sherlock half-interrupts\u00a0him with his ready rejoinder. Like he\u2019s making a point.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a strong enough parallel to make me think he\u2019s apologizing or correcting John\u2019s earlier disgust with his lack of human sympathy (or his choice not to express or indulge in that sympathy)\u2014 at least, I don\u2019t think the writers intended a parallel. But, as an au-loving fic-writer, I can\u2019t help reading it as an attempt to explain something fundamental to Sherlock\u2019s humanity; the brief, controlled admission, “I can be moved.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

No, I think that\u2019s exactly what he\u2019s saying there. \u00a0Think about what you\u2019d be thinking and trying to say with those words if you were in the same place. \u00a0Someone says, \u201cI thought you didn\u2019t\u2014" and you cut them off with, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean\u2026" \u00a0You\u2019re saying, \u201cYou\u2019re mistaken. \u00a0I\u2019m correcting your faulty impression.“ \u00a0You\u2019re saying, \u201cI knew you were going to say that and you\u2019re wrong.”<\/p>\n

Whether Sherlock opens the exchange with this intention or not, he does see it coming and he uses it to make a point. \u00a0He can be moved. \u00a0He appreciates beauty. \u00a0His intellect contains more than logic.<\/p>\n

As far as deliberately making that observation to John, it\u2019s important that Sherlock even says any of this to him at all. \u00a0How many other people does Sherlock even make an effort to accurately represent himself to? \u00a0He doesn\u2019t care what other people think unless it gets in his way. \u00a0In some cases he deliberately distorts their opinions of him if it will get him what he wants. \u00a0Except for John. \u00a0Sherlock wants John to understand him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
