He\u2019d said hardly a word since they left London ten minutes ago.\u00a0 Rose had a pretty good idea why he was so quiet: she was <em>moving<\/em> <em>into <\/em>his TARDIS. He\u2019d invited her to travel with him, there was no question about that. But she had the distinct feeling he didn\u2019t mean to invite her hairbrush and her lip gloss and her underwear \u2014 or anything about her that bore the hint of domesticity.<\/p>\n<p>The Doctor stopped in front of the room where she\u2019d taken a nap after Platform One and Cassandra and the end of the world. \u201cDid you like this one? There are plenty of others. You might as well pick one you like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose peered down the corridor, which stretched out of sight. \u201cWell, this is pretty close to the kitchen and the media room, yeah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Doctor shrugged. \u201cIt is today. Might not be tomorrow.\u201d He glanced at the ceiling with a fond half-smile. \u201cDepends on how the old girl\u2019s feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about your room? Are you somewhere down there?\u201d she asked, nodding at the seemingly infinite corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Wrinkling his forehead, the Doctor shifted from one foot to another. \u201cThis room or not?\u201d he snapped, his words impatient, an ineffective attempt to hide his discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one\u2019s great,\u201d Rose replied with a shrug. Fine. Let him be embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight, in you go,\u201d he said, nudging open the door with his shoulder and stepping across the threshold to drop her backpack on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Rose followed him inside and came to a dead stop, mouth agape. \u201cAre you sure this is the same room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I know my own ship, thanks,\u201d he replied, rolling his eyes. \u201cYou not happy with it now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said, a grin breaking over her face. \u201cNo, I love it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before, the space had been comfortable enough, but much like a hotel room. Generic. Unremarkable. Plain furniture, plainly colored, plainly arranged.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the room was lush with details, every one of them exactly what Rose would have chosen if she\u2019d been given the choice: a pale pink comforter instead of white, a four-poster bed, a dressing table with nooks and crannies for her makeup and ponytail holders. The closet door was cracked just enough to reveal clothes, each item looking as though it had been plucked off the rack of her favorite store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you do this?\u201d she gasped, throwing open the closet door and touching the hoodies inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo what?\u201d The Doctor stared at Rose in genuine puzzlement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything\u2019s different. Everything\u2019s <em>perfect!\u201d <\/em>she said, dashing to the bed, flinging herself onto the comforter.<\/p>\n<p>The Doctor leaned against the bedpost and crossed his arms, watching her as she experimentally squished feather pillows. \u201cThe TARDIS wanted you to feel welcome, I suppose.\u201d He paused. \u201cThe old girl likes you. She\u2019s glad you\u2019re here, Rose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His accent had deepened a little and he was staring at her, eyes very dark and very blue at the same time. Suddenly conscious of the fact that she was wallowing on a bed in front of the Doctor, she sat up and stared back. Her cheeks were burning, but she didn\u2019t look away \u2013 she was flustered, but more than anything, she was curious.<\/p>\n<p>The Doctor blinked and cleared his throat, the corners of his mouth turning up into a too-wide smile. \u201cWelcome aboard, Rose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With that, he left the room.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>gallifreyburning: Carrying her oversized hiking pack, the Doctor led Rose down the TARDIS corridor.
