It\u2019s a ridiculous sounding message, but so <em>inherently<\/em> Sherlock, spoken in that bored and exasperated tone John knew too well: \u201cSherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective. Don\u2019t bother leaving a message if it isn\u2019t pertinent to a case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, sometimes, hearing his voice would be enough for John. Enough to make him smile and laugh, and hang up and go about with his day.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, though, he\u2019d have to leave a voicemail. Just a \u201cHey, Sherlock, I\u2019m not going to be at the flat tonight, just wanted to let you know\u201d or even \u201cMrs. Hudson said you shot her wall again. I\u2019ll let you take care of it this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, just once, years after Sherlock\u2019s death, he said,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once was enough.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>OMG UGLIEST CRYING<\/p>\n<p>John stops blogging. He can\u2019t see the point of it; nothing ever happens to him anymore &#8211; he\u2019s just staying alive. But the good days begin to outnumber the bad ones through sheer bloody-minded placidity, and John fills the inbox of Sherlock\u2019s phone with inane little messages and expects nothing back. With: \u201c<em>How many times can I get into a row with the chip and pin machine before they ban me? -JW<\/em>\u201d, or \u201c<em>Triple murder in the papers today. You\u2019d have loved it. -JW<\/em>\u201d, or simply \u201c<em>Bloody raining again. -JW<\/em>\u201d &#8211; hundreds of texts about everything and nothing at the same time. And John stops blogging. But he never stops talking about his day.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>JFC AS IF THE WOUND ISN\u2019T FRESH ALREADY!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>why are you doing this to me\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>all my brainings are crying mushes now<\/p>\n<p>no why did you type any of that<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And then one day, while John is in Tesco ambling around with a half empty basket, the phone, Sherlock\u2019s phone buzzes inside his pocket. He stops dead, eyes widening and pulls it out. Before looking he stills himself and reminds himself that it\u2019s probably just a wrong number or a mistake of some kind, maybe even a message he sent himself that has been delayed for some reason, it happens.<\/p>\n<p>He sighs and turns the phone over, running his fingers over it like it\u2019s some kind of precious object. The screen is lit, telling him there\u2019s a new message, he pushes the button to open it.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly stiff fingers drop the shopping basket, sending it contents scattering across the vinyl floor.
