My sister got into trouble at school for refusing to do her work. As this isn\u2019t like her at all, I asked her about it. She told me they\u2019d been asked to write about what they want to do when they\u2019re older, and she had said she couldn\u2019t because she doesn\u2019t know what she wants to be yet.<\/p>\n

“Couldn\u2019t you just guess, or write down some ideas?” I asked her.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She looked at me like I\u2019m stupid, something she has managed to get down to a fine art over the years. \u201cI can\u2019t guess Brit. I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m best at yet. I can\u2019t do something that I\u2019m not the best at.\u201d<\/p>\n

“You don\u2019t have to be the best at something to have it as a job” I told her “I\u2019m going to be a teacher but that doesn\u2019t mean I think I\u2019m going to be the best teacher there is.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s different for you though,” she said, giving me The Look again. “You\u2019re a Watson.”<\/p>\n

I had no idea what that meant, so she sat me down and explained it to me. There are, according to my sister, two types of people in the world; Sherlocks and Watsons. Sherlocks are the people who do great things and are great leaders and get written about in history books. Explorers and composers and\u00a0inventors. Watsons are the people who stand behind them, just outside of the limelight, supporting and encouraging their Sherlock and helping them reach their full potential. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with being a Watson, Watsons are incredibly important. No Sherlock would be any good without a Watson helping them out and keeping them sane.They just can\u2019t do it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

“And you\u2019re a Sherlock?” I asked her, and she nodded.<\/p>\n

“That\u2019s why I have to find out what I\u2019m best at. Then my Watson can make sure I\u2019m\u00a0fantastic\u00a0at it.”<\/p>\n

“Am I<\/em> your Watson, then\u201d I asked, \u201cor is it the person you marry?\u201d<\/p>\n

She though about it for a\u00a0minute\u00a0then decided she wasn\u2019t sure that was how it worked. \u201cI think you find your proper Watson through the thing that you\u2019re best at. And you don\u2019t have to marry them, the\u00a0original\u00a0Sherlock and Watson weren\u2019t married, but you have to be really good friends because you have to spend lots of time with them. You\u2019ll find your Watson through being a teacher I think. You\u2019ll be a mini-Watson to everyone, but there\u2019ll be one person that you inspire to do something\u00a0really<\/strong>\u00a0good, and that\u2019ll be your Sherlock.\u201d<\/p>\n

"Does every Watson have a Sherlock? Are there enough to go around?”<\/p>\n

At this she gave me a really\u00a0pitting\u00a0look and stroked my arm. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, I think it works like there\u2019s someone for everyone and you have to meet them to be great. I\u2019m sure you\u2019re somebody\u2019s Watson.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then she changed the subject, more concerned with what was for dinner and whether or not it would snow, oblivious to the fact that most adults don\u2019t form theories that deep.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
