He wanted some\u00a0<em>gold<\/em>. It\u2019s just his\u00a0<em>nature<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Sherlock, dragons aren\u2019t real, you know.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock scowled. \u201cI know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I didn\u2019t know if maybe you deleted it along with the solar system.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You know, you dragged me to see that stupid movie, you shouldn\u2019t complain now that I have\u00a0<em>opinions<\/em> about it.\u201d Sherlock flopped onto the sofa, full sulk mode engaged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I\u2019m sorry,&rdquo; said John. &ldquo;You\u2019re right. I\u2019m glad you identified with somebody in the movie.&rdquo; John paused. &ldquo;Even if it was the evil dragon.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock huffed and turned his back on John.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>John, chuckling, left him to his sulk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am not alone,&rdquo; proclaimed Sherlock, leaping onto John\u2019s bed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>John, startled out of sleep, said, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock shoved his laptop into John\u2019s face, too close for John to focus on, especially in his bleary-eyed state. \u201cI. Am not. Alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No,&rdquo; said John, closing his eyes and turning over. &ldquo;You\u2019re not. You\u2019re with me.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock sprawled across John\u2019s midsection so that he could stay on the side of John\u2019s body that would put him in eyesight if John opened his eyes. \u201cNo. I mean about the dragon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The dragon?&rdquo; John echoed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;From the movie! Oh, my God, John, that was\u00a0<em>your bloody movie<\/em> that\u00a0<em>you wanted to see<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Yes, and I saw it, and I\u2019m fine with not thinking about it in the middle of the night.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I went on the Internet,&rdquo; continued Sherlock, as if John hadn\u2019t spoken, &ldquo;and there are lots of people who agree with me about the dragon.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>John gave up and opened his eyes and looked at Sherlock. \u201cAre you seriously going to wake me up to talk to me about how you\u2019re right in your defense of a\u00a0<em>fictional dragon<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock considered. \u201cYes,\u201d he decided.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You have absolutely no shame,&rdquo; remarked John.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No,&rdquo; Sherlock agreed, and once again shoved his laptop too close in John\u2019s face. &ldquo;See, dragons aren\u2019t\u00a0<em>greedy<\/em>, John, not really, they can\u2019t help it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They\u2019re just addicted to gold?&rdquo; asked John, dryly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;No. Well, unless human beings are addicted to sofas.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What are you talking about?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We could live without comfortable seating, sure, but why would you\u00a0<em>want<\/em> to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&quot;If I had to massacre whole villages to get a comfy chair, then I think I might learn to live without comfy chairs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock groaned in despair and rolled off of John\u2014which was good, because he\u2019d been getting heavy\u2014and wriggled onto his back on the mattress next to him. \u201cYou\u2019re thinking like a\u00a0<em>human<\/em>. You\u2019ve got to think like a\u00a0<em>dragon<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Sherlock, there\u2019s no such thing as\u2014&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It would be tough to be a dragon. They\u2019re really big and scaly and they\u2019ve got massive teeth and then they breathe fire. Humans aren\u2019t going to want to be friends with them. Even if they were a nice dragon. It\u2019s lonely being a dragon. So they find something that makes them feel less lonely. The dwarves all had each other,\u00a0<em>they<\/em> were the greedy ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John looked across at Sherlock\u2019s profile. He thought maybe Sherlock knew something about loneliness and the things you did, desperately, to keep it at bay. \u201cYou\u2019re absolutely mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock made a dismissive sound in the direction of the ceiling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&quot;But maybe you have a point.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock looked at him in absolute delight. John could see it even in the dimness of the bedroom. \u201cSee? I\u2019m right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I said that you have a point. I\u2019m not entirely sure you\u2019re right. I feel like that dragon could have made friends. He had a pretty sexy voice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Their world didn\u2019t have\u00a0<em>telephones<\/em>, John,\u201d said Sherlock, scathingly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>John grinned at him. \u201cI love how seriously you take fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&quot;What is the point of subjecting yourself to something like that if you\u2019re not going to take it\u00a0<em>seriously<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I\u2019m gonna get you hooked on Eastenders. I can\u2019t wait to hear your rants about that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Don\u2019t you think it\u2019s bad enough you made me watch the poor, lonely dragon?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I didn\u2019t think you were going to get sad about the dragon. Sorry about that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sherlock made a sound halfway between\u00a0<em>I didn\u2019t get sad about him<\/em> and\u00a0<em>thank you for realizing I\u2019m sad about him<\/em>.\u00a0<em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For what it\u2019s worth,&rdquo; John said, and rolled on top of him. &ldquo;I\u2019d let you desolate me anytime you like.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You know how much I hate it when you use euphemisms,&rdquo; Sherlock frowned up at him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Fine. Get your laptop out of this bed and shag me through the mattress.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Better,&rdquo; said Sherlock.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Good dragon,&rdquo; said John, and kissed the tip of his nose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Idiot,&rdquo; grumbled Sherlock.
