John got out of bed to find Sherlock was already up and sitting at the table with his laptop. He rolled his eyes and turned on the kettle, yawning and stretching before rubbing his shoulder. Footsteps on the stairs made him turn. Sherlock frowned. \u201cIt\u2019s Mycroft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John got out a teacup and the sugar, knowing what the elder Holmes liked. \u201cJust come in,\u201d said Sherlock, turned back to the computer screen.<\/p>\n<p>Mycroft stepped in as John came out of the kitchen with the tea cup. He stopped and stared when he realized he was holding the hand of a little girl, maybe seven or eight, black hair, darker skinned but with bright blue eyes. She peered up at John and it was all he could do not to drop the cup. \u201cWho\u2019s this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy names Joanna. My mom named me for my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Somehow John found a seat. Mycroft stepped forward and rescued the tea cup. \u201cHer mother passed away recently in an auto accident. She left behind certain papers and I\u2019ve verified the DNA match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John didn\u2019t want to know how or why Mycroft Holmes had his DNA. Instead he smiled at the girl. \u201cI\u2019m sorry about your mum. Would you like a cup of tea?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking a breath he reached for her hand while Mycroft handed Sherlock some paperwork. \u201cDon\u2019t touch what\u2019s on the table there, that\u2019s one of Sherlock\u2019s experiments. Did you have breakfast?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head. He opened the fridge and she stared at the contents. \u201cWhat does Sherlock do?\u201d she asked in a hushed voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a detective, and a very good one. Just a little\u2026odd, that\u2019s all. You\u2019ll get used to him. You can have my room upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d John got some eggs going. \u201cJust friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh. Mum said you were a doctor too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember your mum. She was a very sweet lady. I\u2019m sorry I didn\u2019t know about you sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me you were in the army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell I was, then I got hurt and now I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So this is apparently what I&rsquo;m writing today: The day started out as any other.
