Guillermo del Toro: \u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0exactly<\/em>\u00a0how I shot it\u2014like a sex scene. That scene was all about two people having an intimate connection after beating the crap out of each other.<\/small><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

One of the great things about this movie is that Raleigh is so pleased<\/em> to have been beaten by Mako – have\u00a0you ever seen a\u00a0guy so happy to be thrown on his back?\u00a0(please, let\u2019s haul our minds out of the gutter until later).<\/p>\n

When he comes running after her later (that scene outside his quarters), she looks around and backs away, as though she\u2019s expecting him to be aggressive, as though she\u2019s preparing for a fight – and instead, he\u2019s all \u201cWe\u2019re compatible!\u00a0 We can drift!\u00a0 We can be pilots together!\u201d with hearts in his eyes.<\/p>\n

There isn\u2019t any masculine pride\u00a0or \u201cI\u2019m the veteran, who the hell do you think you are, rookie?\u201d bullshit.\u00a0 He\u2019s found a new partner, after expecting never again to find anyone, after being unwilling to ever again let anyone in his head, and he\u2019s delighted<\/strong> about it.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter that it\u2019s a girl who\u2019s smaller than him who\u2019s just kicked his arse in front of all the rest of the Shatterdome crew.\u00a0 He\u2019s not humiliated, he\u2019s not angry, he\u2019s not resentful\u00a0– he\u2019s found someone good enough to match him and it\u2019s wonderful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
