Sherlock was playing out a game of \u201cwhat if\u201d and realizing that he was endangering John\u2019s life and future by coming back?<\/p>\n<p><strong>If Sherlock hadn\u2019t reappeared in John\u2019s life: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>John wouldn\u2019t be put in life endangering situations (i.e. being kidnapped and stuffed in a bonfire; bomb on train, etc.), and John would still have a \u201cfuture with Mary.\u201d <\/li>\n<li>Sherlock would still be \u201cdead\u201d and not a pressure point that Magnussen could use to get to Mycroft. <\/li>\n<li>Magnussen wouldn\u2019t have focused his attentions on Sherlock, and by extension, on John and Mary. After all, in order to get to Mycroft, he hones in on his pressure point, Sherlock, whose pressure point is John, whose pressure point is Mary. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Magnussen wouldn\u2019t have uncovered Mary\u2019s past and threatened John and Mary\u2019s future.<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I don\u2019t think the tearful \u201cBe careful what you wish for\u201d scene in \u201cThe Empty Hearse\u201d was all an act. Sherlock was not only realizing that John had moved on and that his role in John\u2019s life has changed, but also that <strong>he was further endangering John by coming back<\/strong>. His work in faking death, going on the run, spying, and being tortured would all be for naught if John were to die because of him, again. <\/p>\n<p>I think Sherlock is realizing that coming back to John\u2019s life was a mistake, and he was trying to make it right.
