why does he get to be tender when she can\u2019t? she knows they\u2019d tear her apart if she ever regarded a woman as more than an object \u2014 or if she ever let a woman regard her in that way.<\/li>\n<li>and then you have beatrice. she came out as queer long ago, but doesn\u2019t like to make much of a show of it \u2014 \u201cconfirmed bachelorette\u201d, she calls herself in jest, and comfortably declares \u201che that is more than\u00a0a youth is not for me, and he that is less than a\u00a0man, i am not for him\u201d<\/li>\n<li>(don pedro\u2019s gay too \u2014 the masquerade is probably his fifth or sixth proposal to her. it\u2019s something of a running joke between the two of them)<\/li>\n<li>(benedick doesn\u2019t know that, though \u2014 unlike her, don pedro likes to keep his personal life to himself)<\/li>\n<li>when pedro suggests the prank, it\u2019s as much of a joke as it is in the original \u2014 my god, these women HATE each other, wouldn\u2019t this be funny?<\/li>\n<li>but when it happens to benedick, it\u2019s not a joke<\/li>\n<li>she feels a fluttering in her heart she hasn\u2019t felt since she was 14, with a desperate crush on her schoolmate and no way to relieve that aching but with terrible poetry, poetry so bad that even now it makes her giggle, and she hears her own giggle and claps her hand over her mouth lest anyone hears it and then realizes what she\u2019s just done and thinks, oh my god, i\u2019ve been such an ASSHOLE<\/li>\n<li>and beatrice \u2014 stand i condemned for pride and scorn?
