Interesting.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipaintings.org\/en\/guido-reni\/the-archangel-michael-defeating-satan-1635\" target=\"_blank\">plenty of<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archangel_Michael_in_Christian_art\" target=\"_blank\">winged figures<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Angel_Van_Verschaffelt_SantAngelo_night.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">with swords<\/a> in art history. Angels with swords have been around since Adam and Eve got kicked out of Eden. \u00a0The most famous is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archangel_Michael\" target=\"_blank\">Archangel Michael<\/a>. But I don\u2019t think we\u2019re looking at ol\u2019 Mikey, here. \u00a0That\u2019s not an adult face or body\u2014Michael was always tall and ripped.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/f0d575f12a4cab39bc6fa0846f621284\/tumblr_n1nrvxKCSU1ts6o8bo4_r1_1280.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a child.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, a chubby kid with little wings. Fancy meeting\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0in a show about a\u00a0<em>totally platonic blokeship<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Such a\u00a0<strong>coincidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/874526f346044d9f0cd929162dbb3d91\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo5_400.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ah, Cupid. Our dear Bard sure had you pinned: \u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind<\/em><br \/><em>And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.<\/em>\u00a0(<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nfs.sparknotes.com\/msnd\/page_18.html\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/e7ea26e411640a882c62d270646e704c\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo4_400.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I could be wrong. Maybe it\u2019s not a cupid. There\u2019s the helmet and sword. Later classical depictions of Cupid don\u2019t really include helmets\u2026 except:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/cd71cc71ad2fa889a0ae6a0f91734386\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo1_500.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/content\/sothebys\/fr\/auctions\/ecatalogue\/2013\/age-of-elegance-hk0442\/lot.37.html\" target=\"_blank\">L\u2019Enfant Guerrier<\/a><\/em>, or <em>Amour Guerrier<\/em>\u2014Child Soldier, or Warrior of Love. See, Cupid\u2019s parents were <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mars_(mythology)\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> (god of War) and Venus (goddess of Beauty and Love). <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mars_(mythology)\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> is almost always shown <a href=\"http:\/\/myancientworld.tumblr.com\/post\/20227976738\/mars-the-god-of-war-2ad-greek-god-of-war\" target=\"_blank\">wearing a helmet<\/a>. It\u2019s kind of his trademark. And sometimes Cupid liked to steal Dad\u2019s stuff and cheekily play around.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/6a02fed3f6f2520730d97c1179137746\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo7_r1_400.jpg\" \/>(<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/collection_online\/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=3326336&amp;partId=1\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>The symbolism? <strong>Love is like War<\/strong>. Yeah, Pat Benatar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CjY_uSSncQw\" target=\"_blank\">sang<\/a>\u00a0<em>&lsquo;Love is a Battlefield&rsquo;<\/em>, but antiquity has been banging on that Love\/War trope-drum since time immemorial.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/e55b02bba0213a62ddc2b4c0b028a26c\/tumblr_inline_mz3jcq5Cm41r0a65g.jpg\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, back to our statue\u2014he looks kind of serious. A helmet, a sword, a shield, no bow and arrows. Where\u2019s our cuddly Valentine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=chibi\" target=\"_blank\">chibi<\/a>? Cupids are supposed to be all mischievous sweetness and light and love-darts, right?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Well\u2026 not exactly:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/3cc699f5ff520c88970391d3c5c02b8e\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo9_r1_500.png\" \/>\u00a0(<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/popularencyclop15encygoog\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/26c2ce6717077c887476e296b69ec371\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo10_r1_400.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for the ostrich\u2026 I\u2019m not really sure. Like the above excerpt said, Cupid\/Eros has been depicted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoi.com\/Gallery\/Z31.4.html\" target=\"_blank\">riding<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoi.com\/Gallery\/Z31.7.html\" target=\"_blank\">all<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoi.com\/Gallery\/Z31.8.html\" target=\"_blank\">kinds<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoi.com\/Gallery\/Z31.9.html\" target=\"_blank\">of beasties<\/a>.\u00a0Yes, Pliny the Elder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/science\/articles\/2006\/11\/02\/1777947.htm\" target=\"_blank\">gave us<\/a> the iconic \u2018ostrich with its head in the sand\u2019 image; allusions to ignorance and denial are good points.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s try going\u00a0biblical, just for kicks. In the Bible, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zoocreation.com\/biblespecies\/ostrich.html\" target=\"_blank\">ostriches are depicted<\/a> as tough, cruel, and stupid. (And as bad mothers, since they leave their eggs on the ground.) Also, as incredibly <strong>fast<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div><em>When [the ostrich] rouses herself to flee, she scorneth the horse and his rider.\u00a0<\/em>(<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/job\/39-18.htm\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I mean, <em><strong>really<\/strong><\/em> fast. Not even Xenophon\u2019s ten thousand Greek troops in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anabasis_(Xenophon)\" target=\"_blank\">the Anabasis<\/a> could catch them:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>But no ostrich was captured by anyone, and any horseman who chased one speedily desisted; for it would distance him at once in its flight.<\/em> (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cais-soas.com\/CAIS\/History\/hakhamaneshian\/xenophon\/anabasis\/xeno_anbs_book_1.htm\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Riding an animal is about harnessing its power. Let\u2019s just assume the god of love and desire\u00a0<em><strong>moves <\/strong>really damn quickly.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/29478b8d589c9dccf0d5b2e9099d429e\/tumblr_n1sno5ri4G1ts6o8bo1_500.gif\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/0de1b3671ce7bc89b0a9e382d1370d0b\/tumblr_n1sno5ri4G1ts6o8bo2_500.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/bd3e46303e46f09538916445b700d7f7\/tumblr_n1sno5ri4G1ts6o8bo3_500.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As an aside\u2014there\u2019s not a whole lot of artistic evidence of cherubs or cupids going into battle with swords. But there are the heroic <em>putti<\/em> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marienplatz\" target=\"_blank\">Marienplatz<\/a> in Munich:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/9dc3a28f0c86ed5cab43788ebd77146e\/tumblr_n1spxp4ZQL1ts6o8bo2_500.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/904242238a145d0cbd8b5c16a81552fb\/tumblr_n1sno5ri4G1ts6o8bo10_r1_500.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a whole convoluted political <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lwl.org\/westfaelischer-friede-download\/wfe-t\/wfe-txt2-13.htm\" target=\"_blank\">backstory<\/a>\u00a0behind the\u00a0Mariens\u00e4ule cherubs, but let\u2019s just focus on the symbology.<\/p>\n<p>Cherubs or <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Putto\" target=\"_blank\">putti<\/a><\/em>\u00a0aren\u2019t always associated with Cupid and romantic love. Sometimes they\u2019re guardian spirits, or the Roman <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genius_(mythology)\" target=\"_blank\">genius<\/a><\/em>: physical embodiments of invisible concepts or places, given personalities as they affect human lives.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they stand for the omnipresence of God, or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divine_providence\" target=\"_blank\">divine Providence<\/a>, as they do here in Munich. Their shields bear epithets from Psalm 91:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Super aspidem et basiliscum calcabis conculcabis leonem et draconem<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&ldquo;The asp and the basilisk you will trample under foot <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You will tread on the lion and the <strong>dragon.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em> (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/akjv\/psalms\/91.htm\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, yes. A dragon:<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/bcd2d8eb00b63327297a1a97e8dd7d71\/tumblr_n1spxp4ZQL1ts6o8bo1_500.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, to review: the Appledore statue is probably a conquering <strong>Cupid<\/strong>\u2014an angelic personification of the god of Love and Desire. Rides a fast steed, ready for battle, maybe sometimes slays dragons.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/dc99f0094fe5cb0a084a7a93acb29e0b\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo6_r1_250.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/8931aaa077192314cd27e777779ffc9b\/tumblr_n1sno5ri4G1ts6o8bo4_r1_400.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/0182fda7ad87efba4640f6afaa04c81e\/tumblr_n1sno5ri4G1ts6o8bo5_r1_500.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, one of the most well-known depictions of Cupid was painted by <strike>my art history boyfriend<\/strike>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caravaggio\" target=\"_blank\">Caravaggio<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/0dc824fc8b85b0b3dd4233725c1eda1f\/tumblr_n1sjmuOrou1ts6o8bo8_r1_500.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amor_Vincit_Omnia_(Caravaggio)\" target=\"_blank\">Amor Victorious<\/a>. Amor Vincit Omnia<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>or <strong>&#8216;Love Conquers All&rsquo;<\/strong>. That\u2019s the god of love trampling all over the symbols of science, reason, music, religion, and government. He throws everything into disarray. Caravaggio had a thing for the Roman poet <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgil\" target=\"_blank\">Virgil<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Omnia vincit Amor: et nos cedamus Amori.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLove conquers all; let us all yield [or surrender] to love!\u201d<\/em> (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/classics.mit.edu\/Virgil\/eclogue.10.x.html\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cupid can be vengeful and\u00a0<em>sassy<\/em>. After Apollo (the seriously powerful god of reason and order, who was also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gay-art-history.org\/gay-history\/gay-literature\/gay-mythology-folktales\/homosexual-greek-mythology\/apollo-hyacinth-gay\/apollo-hyacinth-gay.html\" target=\"_blank\">quite gay<\/a>) talks shit about him in Ovid\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metamorphoses\" target=\"_blank\">Metamorphoses<\/a>, Cupid retorts:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The child of Venus glanced at flush Apollo: <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&quot;Your arrows may be murder to us all, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But mine shall pierce your veins: <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As much as mortals are less than the divine, so <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Your glory is less than my poor skill.\u201d<\/em> (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/readytogoebooks.com\/classics\/Ovid-daphne.htm\" target=\"_blank\">x<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The little dude\u2019s retaliation began <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_and_Daphne\" target=\"_blank\">one of the most archetypal tales<\/a> of passionate unrequited love in history. <\/p>\n<p>The moral of the story? Love conquers all, and it can take down a god.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/00c4b923a37477f7684d77935cef7af4\/tumblr_n1sno5ri4G1ts6o8bo6_r1_250.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Oh, Sherlock, honey. You\u2019ve got it all twisted. If classical antiquity has anything to say about it, you\u2019re <em>not<\/em> on the winning side of this battle. Reason and logic won\u2019t protect you.
