Right quick: I think a lot of this season\u2019s about embodiment. While it\u2019s obvious that Sherlock\u2019s coming to terms with his need for emotional connection, he\u2019s also learning about the vulnerability of his body.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c..can this man who\u2019s all mind, pure logic, exist in a vulnerable body? (He begins under torture, he ends as a weeping child.)\u201d (x<\/a>) \u201cHe wants to live by logic, but he can\u2019t escape his chemistry\u201d (x<\/a>). All the excretions, piss and shit and blood and tears, are evidence of our gross materiality, the inescapable body. (Psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva calls such \u201ceffluvia\u201d signs of \u201cthe abject,\u201d the filth and waste that\u00a0 society rejects and is freaked out by.) Most importantly here, they\u2019re means of contamination<\/em>. Sherlock\u2019s piss will provide evidence that he\u2019s contaminated himself mind and body; Magnussen\u2019s piss is a symbolic contamination of Sherlock\u2019s home. (I wrote earlier about Magnussen as a mirror of Sherlock,<\/a> only with a disgusting physicality. \u201cTo every superego its abject,\u201d as Kristeva would say.)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
