It starts in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/04\/28\/the_problem_with_saying_the_media_has_a_%E2%80%9Cwoman_problem%E2%80%9D\/\" target=\"_blank\">childhood and never ends<\/a>.\u00a0Parents interrupt girls twice as often and hold them to stricter politeness norms.\u00a0Teachers engage boys, who correctly see disruptive speech as a marker of dominant masculinity, more often and more dynamically than girls.<\/li>\n<li>For example, male doctors invariably\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11456245\" target=\"_blank\">interrupt patients<\/a>\u00a0when they speak, especially female patients but patients rarely interrupt doctors in return. Unless the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linguistik-online.de\/1_00\/KUNSMANN.HTM\" target=\"_blank\">doctor is a woman<\/a>. When that is the case, she interrupts far less and is herself interrupted more.<\/li>\n<li>This is also true of senior managers in the workplace. Male bosses are not frequently talked over or stopped by those working for them, especially if they are women; however, female bosses are routinely interrupted by their male subordinates.<\/li>\n<li>As adults, women\u2019s speech is granted less authority. We aren\u2019t thought of as\u00a0able\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/2014\/04\/female-critics-gender.html\" target=\"_blank\">critics<\/a>\u00a0or<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/culture\/features\/2007\/01\/hitchens200701\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0as\u00a0funny<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Men\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dooku.miun.se\/engelska\/englishC\/C-essay\/D_essays\/Jessikafinalversion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">speak<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/das.sagepub.com\/content\/3\/2\/131.refs\" target=\"_blank\">more<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citeseer.uark.edu:8080\/citeseerx\/showciting;jsessionid=671D97A4EC266880B7578230C0DBC5B1?cid=3620911\" target=\"_blank\">more often<\/a>, and longer than women in mixed groups (<a href=\"http:\/\/isites.harvard.edu\/fs\/html\/icb.topic58474\/krupnick.html\" target=\"_blank\">classrooms<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.byu.edu\/archive12-sep-women.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">boardrooms<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.byu.edu\/archive12-sep-women.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">legislative bodies<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.4thestate.net\/female-voices-in-media-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\">expert media commentary<\/a>\u00a0and, for obvious reasons\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sorayachemaly.tumblr.com\/post\/83717593699\/catholic-cardinals-moslem-imams-hindu\" target=\"_blank\">religious institutions<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>Indeed,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-2205502\/The-great-gender-debate-Men-dominate-75-conversation-conference-meetings-study-suggests.html\" target=\"_blank\">in male-dominated problem solving groups<\/a>\u00a0including boards, committees, and legislatures, men speak 75% more than women, with negative effects on decisions reached. That\u2019s why, as researchers summed up, \u201cHaving a seat at the table is not the same as having a voice.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Even in movies and television, male actors engage in more\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.interruptions.net\/literature\/Zhao-JCommunication03.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">disruptive<\/a>\u00a0speech and garner twice as much\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.themarysue.com\/oscars-lead-actresses-screen-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">speaking and screen time<\/a>\u00a0as their female peers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cios.org\/EJCPUBLIC\/003\/2\/00328.HTML\" target=\"_blank\">Listserve<\/a>\u00a0topics introduced by men have a much higher rate of response.<\/li>\n<li>On Twitter, people\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/alltwitter\/twee-q-sexist-twitter_b26170\" target=\"_blank\">retweet men two times as often<\/a>\u00a0as women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best part though is that we are socialized to think women talk more.\u00a0Listener bias results in most people\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.cambridge.org\/action\/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&amp;aid=2746840\" target=\"_blank\">thinking that women are hogging the floor when men are actually dominating.<\/a>\u00a0Linguists have concluded that much of what is popularly understood about women and men being from different planets, verbally,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.courts.wa.gov\/programs_orgs\/pos_interpret\/content\/signLanguageMaterials\/oBarrandAtkins.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">confuses<\/a>\u00a0\u201cwomen\u2019s language\u201d with \u201cpowerless language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This preference for what men have to say, supported by men and women both, is a variant on \u201cmansplaining.\u201d The word came out of an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guernicamag.com\/daily\/rebecca-solnit-men-explain-things-to-me\/\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>\u00a0by writer Rebecca Solnit, who explained that the tendency some men have to grant their own speech greater import than a perfectly competent woman\u2019s is not a universal male trait, but the \u201cintersection between overconfidence and cluelessness where some portion of that gender gets stuck.\u201d\u00a0Solnit\u2019s tipping point experience really did take the cake. She was talking to a man at a cocktail party when he asked her what she did. She replied that she wrote books, and she described her most recent one,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0142004103\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0142004103&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=gueamagofarta-20\" target=\"_blank\">River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West<\/a>.<\/em>The man interrupted her\u00a0soon after she said the word Muybridge and asked, \u201cAnd have you heard about the\u00a0<em>very important<\/em>\u00a0Muybridge book that came out this year?\u201d He then waxed on, based on his reading of a review of the book, not even the book itself, until finally a friend said, \u201cThat\u2019s her book.\u201d He ignored that friend (also a woman) and she had to say it more than three times before \u201che went ashen\u201d and walked away. If you are not a woman, ask any woman you know what this is like, because it is not fun and happens to all of us.<\/p>\n<p>Last week as I sat in a cafe, a man in his 60\u2032s stopped to ask me what I was writing. I told him, a book about gender and media and he said, \u201cI went to a conference where someone talked about that a few years ago. I read a paper about it a few years ago. Did you know that car manufacturers use\u00a0slightly denigrating images of women to sell cars? I\u2019d be happy to help you.\u201d After I suggested, smiling cheerily, that the images were beyond denigrating and definitively injurious to women\u2019s dignity, free speech, and parity in culture he drifted off<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of Larry Summers\u2019 \u201cwomen can\u2019t do math\u201d controversy several years ago, scientist Ben Barres\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/07\/12\/AR2006071201883.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a>\u00a0publicly about his experiences, first as a woman and later in life, as a male. As a female student at MIT, Barbara Barres was told by a professor after solving a particularly difficult math problem, \u201cYour boyfriend must have solved it for you.\u201d When several years after, as Ben Barres, he gave a well-received scientific speech, he overhead a member of the audience say, \u201cHis work is much better than his sister\u2019s.\u201d \u00a0Most notably, he concluded that one of the major benefits of being male was that he could now \u201ceven complete a whole sentence without being interrupted by a man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rolereboot.org\/culture-and-politics\/details\/2014-05-10-simple-words-every-girl-learn\/#.U2jpDJNjbos.twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Really, practice those ten words<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cStop interrupting me.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI just said that.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cNo explanation needed.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>HAVING A SEAT AT THE TABLE IS NOT THE SAME TO HAVING A VOICE<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry but you fucking pissed me off at \u201cMen assume they are so great\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"http:\/\/25.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_m3bk50Knw31r3ovdbo1_500.gif\" class=\"decoded\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_m3bk50Knw31r3ovdbo1_500.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ok I\u2019m not gonna say that there isn\u2019t some big headed guys in the world, especially in business type environments.<\/p>\n<p>But when you blanket judge an entire gender based on the actions of a few dickwads when I can name list upon list of men that suffer from low self esteem and confidence then I\u2019m gonna be pissed off!<\/p>\n<p>I hate myself for fuck sake!
