(hawaii, whose population was about a quarter japanese, was for the most part not included in this.) given only a few weeks to organize their lives, they were then sent via cattle train to concentration camps set up throughout the us.<\/li>\n<li>since morita was from fresno, he would have ended up here:<br \/><img alt=\"charming.\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-FXaxFNGeMAU\/T0htkthjymI\/AAAAAAAAESY\/te3_CTWhdjk\/s1600\/20-1609a_ed.jpg\" \/><\/li>\n<li>sunny poston, arizona. conveniently built on an indian reservation\u00a0against the wishes of the tribal council, who wanted nothing to do with the government\u2019s white supremacist bullshit. why only infringe on the rights and wishes of one minority group, right?<\/li>\n<li>\nchoice quote: \u00a0\u00a0\u201dAfter fifteen months at Arizona\u2019s vast Poston Relocation Center as a social analyst, Commander Leighton concluded that many an American simply fails to remember that U.S. Japanese are human beings.\u201d\n<\/li>\n<li>shortly after arriving, all prisoners were asked to fill out a survey. most of the questions would be simple, like their name, city of birth, etc, but questions 27 and 28 were different.<\/li>\n<li>\nquestion 27: \u00a0Are you willing to serve in the armed forces of the United States on combat duty, wherever ordered?<\/li>\n<li>question 28: \u00a0Will you swear unqualified allegiance to the United States of America and faithfully defend the United States from any and all attacks by foreign and domestic forces, and forswear any form of allegiance or disobedience to the Japanese Emperor, or any other foreign government, power, or organization?<\/li>\n<li>did you answer yes to both? congratulations! you\u2019re a soldier. did you answer no to both? perhaps you\u2019re too old or sick to serve? perhaps the general fuckery of this entire situation got you down? perhaps you were born outside of the us, so you can\u2019t disavow your country of origin since there is a very real chance you\u2019ll be deported? haha well congratulations hope you like prison and\/or deportation<\/li>\n<li>so all of this goes on<\/li>\n<li>and then morita goes on to serve<\/li>\n<li>and get captured<\/li>\n<li>and rescued<\/li>\n<li>and dumbass doogan says, \u201cwhat, are we taking everybody?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>fuck you<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>i\u2019m from fresno<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the things that most freaks me out about the passage of time is that this shit becomes a distant memory to people who weren\u2019t directly affected, and we lose the voices of those who were there.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m almost 40, so for me, this is stuff that happened to my friends\u2019 parents and grandparents (the only reason it didn\u2019t happen to my mother-in-law\u2019s aunt is that she and her family lived in Hawaii). People\u2019s family members would volunteer to come talk to school kids about the way their country betrayed them with the camps. So that people would know. So they\u2019d care. So they\u2019d make damn sure it never happened again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Timeline correction to the above: the attack on Pearl Harbor happened in 1941.)<\/p>\n<p>It took until 1988, 46 years later, for the United States government to make a formal apology and financial settlement to the victims of internment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Forty-six fucking years.<\/p>\n<p>So kids, if this shit\u2019s new to you, give your history teachers a serious talking-to about the lesson plans, because if this *isn\u2019t* being taught in US schools, it fucking well better be.
