Off the top of my head, whatever it was that John did to put this look on Dean\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

But if you want to talk canon specifics, let\u2019s take a spin through my fuck john winchester<\/a> tag.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Okay, John was a child abuser<\/a>. He was\u00a0legally<\/em> a child abuser for leaving his children alone the way the he did, when Dean was only 9 if not younger. He left his children alone in hotel rooms to fend for themselves for days at a time, sometimes without enough money for food. \u00a0This is child abuse<\/em>. You\u00a0cannot<\/em> leave a 9 year old in charge of a 5 year old and expect him to take care of the boy like he was an adult. \u00a0Putting this kind of responsibility on a child is going to incur\u00a0lifelong psychological damage.<\/em><\/p>\n

I personally believe that John was physically abusive, especially to Dean, but I can\u2019t prove that canonically beyond Sam calling John a mean drunk and the fact that violence is completely normalized between the brothers. \u00a0John was patently verbally and emotionally abusive to both Sam and Dean and I\u2019m not even going to go find gifs of that because it\u2019s in literally all their interactions. \u00a0Strong, brave Dean becomes passive and terrified in his father\u2019s presence, and sweet, loving Sam becomes seething and full of rage.<\/p>\n

Bottom line, the worst thing John ever did was putting the responsibility for Sam on Dean\u2019s shoulders when he was too young to even take care of\u00a0himself<\/em>. \u00a0This is neglect, this is abuse, this is shirking all of his own duty to his children and then laying blame on Dean when he cannot live up to impossible standards. \u00a0But let\u2019s go through some specifics.<\/p>\n

How about when Dean was 16 and he lost their food money gambling (probably trying to get more food money), and so he ended up stealing peanut butter and bread – to\u00a0survive and feed his little brother<\/em> – and he got arrested?<\/p>\n

Can we just talk about how the only real chance at happiness and a normal life that Dean actually got was at a home for juvenile delinquents? I mean can we just talk about how\u00a0fucked up that is<\/em>?<\/em><\/p>\n

How about what John was out doing while he was leaving the boys alone in motel rooms?<\/p>\n

How about when Dean was\u00a0dying<\/em> and John literally wouldn\u2019t pick up the phone much less show up?<\/p>\n

Or the other time Dean was dying and he didn\u2019t care?<\/p>\n

I could also throw in the fact that one of the biggest demons in hell actually made a better father than John.<\/p>\n

This is all absolutely canon, indisputable. But what I find incredibly revealing is the episode It\u2019s a Terrible Life<\/em>. \u00a0Here, Dean was raised by Bobby and Ellen, with Jo for a sister. \u00a0Dean Smith is basically a photo negative of Dean Winchester.<\/p>\n

He eats salads, he does the Master Cleanse, he has an espresso machine, he drives a fucking\u00a0Prius<\/em>. \u00a0He\u2019s a business man with fashionable clothes and an upscale apartment. \u00a0I mean, can you say metrosexual?<\/p>\n

This Dean doesn\u2019t overcompensate, he\u2019s not macho or butch, he\u2019s not one step away from alcoholism, he\u2019s not a broke high school dropout. \u00a0He went to\u00a0Stanford<\/em>, and considering that Bobby and Ellen probably would not have had the money for that, we can hypothesize that he got in on scholarship. \u00a0He doesn\u2019t drive his dad\u2019s old car because it\u2019s not the only home and security he\u2019s known since he was four. \u00a0He also doesn\u2019t appear to be a \u201cladies man\u201d, as we never actually see him talking to a woman. \u00a0The only person he seems to be flirting with appears to be his assistant, whom he talks to about Project Runway.<\/p>\n

This Dean could easily be openly bisexual, because he grew up in a loving and safe family. \u00a0This Dean embraced his education as well as his love of fashion, this Dean is successful and stylish. \u00a0We don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on in his personal life or if he\u2019s happy, but he is plainly a normal, functional, stable human being. \u00a0This is who Dean would be if John wasn\u2019t his father.<\/p>\n

This is who Dean would be if John wasn\u2019t his<\/em><\/strong> father<\/strong>.<\/em> This is who Dean\u00a0could<\/em> have been if John had not turned him into Sam\u2019s parent while depriving Dean of a parent himself, dragging him from place to place, isolating him, while turning him into a child soldier and a tool to further his quest for vengeance – and using him as an emotional if not physical punching bag.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t \u201ctry his best\u201d. \u00a0Trying his best would be\u00a0not<\/em> chasing down the demon, would be giving his sons a home and a childhood. \u00a0Would have been at fucking least putting them in\u00a0foster care<\/em> instead of dragging them across the country with him. \u00a0He didn\u2019t\u00a0love<\/em> them. \u00a0What he did is not\u00a0love<\/em>, it just fucking isn\u2019t. \u00a0Whatever \u2018love\u2019 he had, it was twisted and selfish and damaging. \u00a0John did not love his sons, not the way I define love.<\/p>\n

I literally, honestly don\u2019t care that John traded his life for Dean\u2019s in the end. \u00a0I mean, to say \u201ctoo little too late\u201d is a vivid understatement. \u00a0I don\u2019t care what he said, I seriously,\u00a0seriously<\/em> don\u2019t care what he said in that hospital scene. \u00a0I\u2019ve never been physically abused, but my father did fuck up my head and my life pretty well, and he says all\u00a0kinds<\/em> of nice things trying to get me back on his side, and I don\u2019t care about any of it. \u00a0All the \u201cI\u2019m proud of you\u201ds in the world can\u2019t change what you\u2019ve\u00a0done<\/em>. \u00a0And really all John\u00a0did<\/em> then was heap more responsibility and guilt on Dean\u2019s shoulders.<\/p>\n

So basically –\u00a0everything<\/em>. \u00a0Everything John did to his sons was the worst.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
