During Prohibition it\u2019s true that some people turned to cooking extracts. Unfortunately, many of these contained ethanol. In order to prevent Jamaica ginger extract\u2014which was often produced and distributed as a \u2018patent medicine\u2019\u2014from being sought out for recreational use the US government required an elevated solids content; this would result in a bitter, unpalatable beverage.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diigo.com\/item\/t\/5zEh9G3Dzoc6C%2BvSGRieOwGe8eEtiEgeHBosAE2GAxGL4BStcmu6cO3t3iRs%0A0i8I%0A\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, folks drank \u2018jake\u2019 (as it was called) anyway. This caused paralysis, loss of limbs, and death in many cases, disproportionately in immigrants and the lower class. This was the inspiration for such songs as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2COwe6-yLvg\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Leg Blues<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VySed3bBn2o&amp;feature=kp\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Walk Blues<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VySed3bBn2o&amp;feature=kp\" target=\"_blank\">Jake Liquor Blues<\/a>.
