okay, okay, so, imagine in captain america that the serum doesn\u2019t work and steve is still a sickly little bony guy and everyone is absolutely crushed, especially him, and erskin gets shot so there goes his last hope that he\u2019d ever, ever make something of himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n

then: agent carter finds him, after all the fuss and recriminations, after everyone shouting that of course it wouldn\u2019t work on someone like steve, who doesn\u2019t have anything to work with anyway, maybe his body just couldn\u2019t manage it, maybe his sicknesses were too much to overcome or negated the serum somehow, what a waste, what a fucking waste. carter comes to him and sits down by him and he\u2019s just putting everything he\u2019s got into not crying like the little baby he looks like\u2014that he\u2019s stuck as forever\u2014and she\u2019s like, i\u2019ve been thinking about getting an assistant. someone to keep my affairs in order, and to watch my back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

and he\u2019s like, what.<\/em> and she\u2019s like, you\u2019re still enlisted, rogers. and he just\u00a0looks<\/em> at her\u2014she\u2019s beautiful and brilliant, she\u2019s this stern and lethal amazon, and she says she has a place for him at her side. as a pet? as\u00a0<\/em> charity\u2014<\/em>no, no. never. she\u2019d put him to use. he can hold a gun, a pistol, can\u2019t he, if not a rifle? his hands work, don\u2019t they? and his mind works, too, it\u2019s quick and bold\u2014and she looks away, quickly, embarrassed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

yeah, <\/em>steve says, quiet, disbelieving, scared to hope for anything else just yet. yeah, i can hold a gun. i, i could, i would\u2014but so can anyone else in this room so why me, why do you want me, you heard them, i\u2019m nobody, always will be\u2014<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

being underestimated, says agent carter, is just another weapon. you\u2019ll see.\u00a0<\/p>\n
