but I digress), I thanked him for being who he was and for playing Captain Jack because his choices made my job as a parent infinitely easier and told him why.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When my son Alton was five, he was sitting at the coffee table coloring while Doctor Who was on.\u00a0 We had just watched Bad Wolf\/Parting of the Ways and my son looked up at me suddenly and said, \u201cJack kissed Rose, so he likes girls.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I watched him carefully as I answered, \u201cYes, Jack likes Rose and he knows she likes him, too, so he kissed her.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He went back to his coloring and then said, \u201cAnd Jack kissed the Doctor, so he likes boys.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I nodded and said,\u201dYes, Jack likes the Doctor as well and he wanted him to know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My five-year-old son said, \u201cSo it\u2019s OK to kiss someone when you love them as long as it\u2019s OK with them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded and that was it.\u00a0 He was satisfied and went back to his coloring.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever he had questions about anything to do with sexuality, Alton always prefaced his questions with, \u201cSo, Mom, remember when Captain Jack\u2026?\u201d and I always knew it was going to be an interesting conversation.<\/p>\n<p>I found out earlier this year that an older boy close to our family harassed another boy who came out as gay.\u00a0 He taunted him and called him horrible names, but he made the mistake of doing this in front of my son and tried to enlist him as well.\u00a0 He fully expected my boy to join in, so he was surprised when my then-eight-year old pointedly refused to do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You watch Doctor Who, right?&rdquo; Alton said.\u00a0 &ldquo;And you like Captain Jack, right?&quot;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The older boy answered, \u201cYeah, but what\u2019s that got to do with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My boy answered, \u201cWell, for starters, it makes you a hypocrite.\u00a0 If Jack can like boys and you don\u2019t care, why do you care who he likes?\u00a0 It\u2019s none of your business.\u00a0 Jack and the Doctor would both be ashamed of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that was it.\u00a0 My boy didn\u2019t tell me about this at all.\u00a0 I found out about it from a third-party who witnessed it and asked me about it months later.\u00a0 My son didn\u2019t even think his reaction was unusual enough to mention to me.\u00a0\u00a0 He did what he thought was right and moved on- end of story.<\/p>\n<p>When John was in San Antonio, I tried to tell him that the boy with me was the same one I told him about in Houston, but several months and numerous conventions had passed since then, and I didn\u2019t really have the time to explain while in an autograph line, so I\u2019m pretty sure he didn\u2019t remember.\u00a0 Nevertheless, John was absolutely lovely to my son.\u00a0 He posed with him, with both of them saluting the camera.\u00a0 When we went through the line to have the photo autographed, my son gave JB his own picture dressed in his Captain Jack costume.\u00a0 John immediately grabbed a marker and had my son autograph the picture, \u201cTo John, Love Alton.\u201d\u00a0 My son is still telling people about this.<\/p>\n<p>I always knew John Barrowman was a lovely person- and so was Scott, by the way- but now I have irrefutable proof.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thank you for sharing this! John is truly awesome. Your story about your son is what John loves and John\u2019s reaction is one of the reasons we love him so much.
