Image #p0103) (x)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Indian woman, Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anandi_Gopal_Joshi\" target=\"_blank\">Anandi Gopal Joshi<\/a>, was the first Indian woman to earn a degree in Western medicine, and also believed to be the first Hindu woman to set foot on American soil.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese woman, Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kei_Okami\" target=\"_blank\">Kei Okami<\/a>, was the first Japanese woman to obtain a degree in Western Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian woman is Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/newsblog.drexel.edu\/2013\/07\/24\/from-india-japan-and-syria-19th-century-women-who-trekked-to-philadelphia-for-medical-school\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sabat Islambooly<\/a>.\u00a0 Her name is spelled incorrectly on that photograph.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those interested, here\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/amovablearchives.blogspot.ca\/2010\/02\/from-collections-constant-diversity.html\" target=\"_blank\">more information on other women of color who attended and graduated from Women\u2019s Medical College of Philadelphia in the past<\/a>, with a focus on the Japanese-American women they accepted during the US WW2 internment of Japanese-Americans.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ami-angelwings: badass-bharat-deafmuslimpunkstar: An Indian woman, a Japanese woman, and a Syrian woman, all training to be doctors at Women\u2019s Medical College of Philadelphia, 1880s.
