For one thing, academia has a terrible habit of being<em> increeeedibly sloooow<\/em> to discuss new ideas \u2014 partly due to the very long turnaround time necessary to get articles published. By contrast, <em>Transformative Works and Cultures<\/em> is super up-to-date and teaming with topics that are actually relevant to modern fandom.<\/p>\n<p>Want to read an academic article about female fans being \u201cfridged\u201d in comic book culture? <a href=\"http:\/\/journal.transformativeworks.org\/index.php\/twc\/article\/view\/460\" target=\"_blank\">Done<\/a>. Interested in learning about the societal implications of mpreg within fanfiction\/fanart? <a href=\"http:\/\/journal.transformativeworks.org\/index.php\/twc\/article\/view\/135\/141\" target=\"_blank\">Here you go<\/a>. Want to learn more about race and ethnicity in fandom? <a href=\"http:\/\/journal.transformativeworks.org\/index.php\/twc\/article\/view\/392\/252\" target=\"_blank\">Well, would you look at that<\/a>. Feel a mighty need to read a specially-conducted interview with Orlando Jones about producer\/fan interactions in \u201cSleepy Hollow\u201d? <em><a href=\"http:\/\/journal.transformativeworks.org\/index.php\/twc\/article\/view\/601\/436\" target=\"_blank\">Holy butts the show only came out in 2013 and they already have this what the hell<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And all of this \u2014 <\/strong><strong>all of the knowledge, all of the analysis, all of the academic credibility being added to fannish ideas \u2014 is 100% free to access.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Transformative Works and Cultures<\/em> is doing fandom an incredible service: by giving a voice to people within fandom, by preserving the discussions and ideas that were important to fannish culture at certain points in time, by emphasizing our significance as a subculture \u2014 and all the while doing it <em>on our own terms<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>These are fans working hard to give legitimacy to other fans, and if you don\u2019t think that\u2019s rad as hell then I don\u2019t even know what to tell you.\u00a0<em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>emilianadarling: EVERYONE STOP WHAT YOU\u2019RE DOING RIGHT NOW AND READ THIS BECAUSE HOLY SHIT MY WHOLE LIFE JUST CHANGED FOR THE BETTER.
