Idk, maybe it\u2019s just me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh man, it\u2019s been (OY) almost thirty years since I read it, but man, I think you might be on to something. I remember the list of suppression methods most clearly\u2014here\u2019s the summary from Wikipedia, which I think is pretty accurate:<\/p>\n<p>The book outlines eleven common methods that are used to ignore, condemn or belittle the work of female authors:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prohibitions:<\/strong> Prevent women from access to the basic tools for writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad Faith: <\/strong>Unconsciously create social systems that ignore or devalue women\u2019s writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Denial of Agency: <\/strong>Deny that a woman wrote it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pollution of Agency: <\/strong>Show that their art is immodest, not actually art, or shouldn\u2019t have been written about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Double Standard of Content: <\/strong>Claim that one set of experiences is considered more valuable than another.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>False Categorizing: <\/strong>Incorrectly categorize women artists as the wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, or lovers of male artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isolation: <\/strong>Create a myth of isolated achievement that claims that only one work or short series of poems is considered great.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anomalousness: <\/strong>Assert that the woman in question is eccentric or atypical.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lack of Models: <\/strong>Reinforce a male author dominance in literary canons in order to cut off women writers\u2019 inspiration and role models.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responses: <\/strong>Force women to deny their female identity in order to be taken seriously.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aesthetics: <\/strong>Popularize aesthetic works that contain demeaning roles and characterizations of women.<\/p>\n<p><sup class=\"reference\" id=\"cite_ref-htswr_1-2\"><\/sup>Yeah, if you replace the word \u201cwoman\u201d with the word \u201cfan\u201d here, things get pretty interesting\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>professorfangirl: Ormondsacker asked me: \u201cHave you ever read Joanna Russ\u2019 \u201cHow to Suppress Women\u2019s Writing\u201d and if so what did you think of it?
