Wilder\u2019s <em>The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes<\/em> is considered to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2010\/nov\/07\/mark-gatiss-sherlock-holmes\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Gatiss\u2019 and Steven Moffat\u2019s template<\/a> for their version of Sherlock Holmes, as well as their favorite adaptation. Gatiss considers Wilder and Diamond to be \u201camong the best screenwriters in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What they don\u2019t mention is that the commonly-available version of the film is, in fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/skulls-and-tea.tumblr.com\/post\/107808349626\/the-original-screenplay-of-the-private-life-of\" target=\"_blank\">heavily edited<\/a>, largely due to <a href=\"http:\/\/skulls-and-tea.tumblr.com\/post\/92670824071\/i-should-have-been-more-daring-with-the-private\" target=\"_blank\">censorship laws and Wilder\u2019s conflicts with the Doyle estate at the time of filming<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The original screenplay was what Wilder consider <a href=\"http:\/\/skulls-and-tea.tumblr.com\/post\/107808349626\/the-original-screenplay-of-the-private-life-of\" target=\"_blank\">a symphony with four movements<\/a>, including multiple cases and an expansion on Holmes\u2019 relationship with drugs, an extended prologue, as well as more personal conversations with Dr. Watson.<\/p>\n<p>The final release only included two of those four movements.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those deleted scenes are included in the special features of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Private-Life-Sherlock-Holmes\/dp\/B00005JKHF\/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1421517454&amp;sr=1-2&amp;keywords=private+life+of+sherlock\" target=\"_blank\"><em>TPLoSH<\/em> DVD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is no way to fully grasp the arc of Wilder\u2019s original, uncensored vision of the film without viewing the full screenplay.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for us, there\u2019s an elderly Sherlockian out there with an impressive screenplay archive, a love of Wilder films, and a generous spirit. All credit to him for this find.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve included a free download link for the full roadshow version of the <em>TPLoSH<\/em> script below.
