{"id":170456,"date":"2015-01-29T01:15:14","date_gmt":"2015-01-29T01:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.merindab.com\/private\/2015\/01\/29\/prettyarbitrary-avengetheangels-captain\/"},"modified":"2015-01-29T01:15:14","modified_gmt":"2015-01-29T01:15:14","slug":"prettyarbitrary-avengetheangels-captain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.merindab.com\/private\/2015\/01\/29\/prettyarbitrary-avengetheangels-captain\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prettyarbitrary.tumblr.com\/post\/109047377670\/captain-america-the-first-avenger-trivia-click\" class=\"tumblr_blog\" target=\"_blank\">prettyarbitrary<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a class=\"tumblr_blog\" href=\"http:\/\/avengetheangels.tumblr.com\/post\/97342142456\" target=\"_blank\">avengetheangels<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Captain America: The First Avenger Trivia <small>Click gifs for more trivia in captions<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Calling jeet kune do a style is really misleading. \u00a0It\u2019s Cap\u2019s fighting style in the sense that Cap sucks up whatever works and then stuffs it all together in an effective way. \u00a0And that\u2019s what jeet kune do IS.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Lee grew up street-fighting in Hong Kong. \u00a0As such, he learned martial arts as a way to beat the snot out of other people. \u00a0He always found the kind of stylized kata-based tournament-style martial arts to be, hm. \u00a0Usually they teach you how to look pretty, not how to be effectual (with a few exceptions, such as boxing, which he had a lot of respect for because boxers have never forgotten the point of fighting; and the occasional dojo where they focus on things like self-defense or MMA).<\/p>\n<p>So, while Lee studied many styles, when it came time to use them he simply snagged everything that worked and threw it into his personal style. \u00a0And that became known as jeet kune do, even though it is, in the formal sense, the opposite of a style.<\/p>\n<p>There are now dojos that train people in \u2018jeet kune do,\u2019 even though in some cases they\u2019re turning Lee\u2019s fighting into something that\u2019s exactly the sort of stylized and ineffective thing he worked to get away from. \u00a0In other cases, they\u2019re simply training you how to be a down-and-dirty fighter, in case you ever need to knock somebody down.<\/p>\n<p>So to say that Cap\u2019s style is \u2018jeet kune do\u2019 is simply to say that Cap\u2019s style is to be a combat-move-sponge and to beat the snot out of his opponents in an idiosyncratic but highly effective way. \u00a0Which is not a thing that Bruce Lee invented, although he was responsible for a renaissance in martial arts and reminding practitioners the world over that the point was not to look pretty, but to stun the fuck out of your opponent.<\/p>\n<p>I bet Steve was thrilled when he discovered Bruce Lee, though. \u00a0In Marvel-verse, Steve was probably one of the fighters Bruce Lee studied, and I\u2019m sure Steve later returned the favor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>prettyarbitrary: avengetheangels: Captain America: The First Avenger Trivia Click gifs for more trivia in captions Calling jeet kune do a style is really misleading. \u00a0It\u2019s Cap\u2019s fighting style in the sense that Cap sucks up whatever works and then stuffs it all together in an effective way. \u00a0And that\u2019s what jeet kune do IS.
