Everything we need to know about the Bechdel test and the obscene application of it is the fact that people are gushing over it in a film in which Frigga is fridged to give the two male leads manpain.<\/p>\n<p>But lol, Darcy and Jane talked about a cellphone! FEMINIST WIN!!!!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s\u2026 kind of the point of the bechdel test, though?\u00a0 Passing the bechdel test doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve created a feminist masterpiece.\u00a0 It is literally meant to represent the <i>bare minimum<\/i> of standards for writing female characters.\u00a0 Even if a film passes the bechdel test, it could still contain harmful messages about women.\u00a0 And, as mentioned above, the bechdel test has no stipulations about the <i>types <\/i>of women a movie should have in it, so it does nothing to advocate for the representation of marginalized women.<\/p>\n<p>The most common criticism of the bechdel Test is that it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2014\/01\/07\/the_bechdel_test_needs_an_update_we_ve_set_the_bar_for_female_representation.html\" target=\"_blank\">sets the bar too low<\/a>, but that\u2019s literally what the bechdel Test is.\u00a0 It\u2019s setting the bar <i>so low<\/i> that when you realize how many movies can\u2019t even clear that bar, it shows you just how worthless Hollywood is at writing women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood is <i>so bad<\/i> at female characters that it typically can\u2019t even deliver two white able-bodied neurotypical heterosexual cisgender women talking together about something other than a man.<\/p>\n<p>The bechdel test can\u2019t be used as the sole basis of judgment for a film\u2019s feminist quality.\u00a0 See Pacific Rim, for example, and the bechdel-inspired <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailydot.com\/fandom\/mako-mori-test-bechdel-pacific-rim\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mako Mori Test<\/a>.\u00a0 Pacific Rim does not pass the bechdel test, but it it definitely more feminist than the Simpsons\/Family Guy crossover episode, which did pass.<\/p>\n<p>tl;dr, the point of this gifset\u2019s caption isn\u2019t, \u201cSOUND THE TRUMPETS AND TOSS THE ROSE PETALS, FOR THIS MOVIE HATH PASSED THE BECHDEL TEST!\u201d No, the point is, \u201cthis is such a lax standard that it\u2019s ridiculous how many movies can\u2019t even accomplish this much.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Quoting for emphasis: \u201cPassing the bechdel test doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve created a feminist masterpiece.\u00a0 It is literally meant to represent the\u00a0<i>bare minimum<\/i>\u00a0of standards for writing female characters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>petratodd: quietgames: zarabithia: acceber74: findsomethingtofightfor: almostperfectalibi: *whispers* Bechdel pass.
