I\u2019ve always really liked this idea\u2014that they\u2019re the exact same age, but their different lives have given them very different levels of maturity, and Luke is envious, but fascinated, and idolizes her a bit.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s kind of weird to think of Han as being a big influence compared to Leia.\u00a0 I mean, yes, they were close.\u00a0 But it\u2019s made reasonably obvious that close male friends aren\u2019t something Luke\u2019s ever lacked.\u00a0 If anything, I\u2019d say they\u2019re mutually influential.\u00a0 Han\u2019s experience and training help temper Luke\u2019s youth and inexperience, and his cynicism demands that Luke account for his own faith. Luke, in turn, cracks Han\u2019s shell with hope and faith, and his earnest belief that Han can be better than what he\u2019s let himself become won\u2019t let him crawl back into the hole he\u2019s dug for himself.<\/p>\n

But Leia?<\/p>\n

I mean, come on.\u00a0 Luke\u2019s got these vague intentions to run away and do\u2026something.\u00a0 He\u2019s dissatisfied with his home life, he\u2019s dissatisfied with the future he sees for himself, and he resents, in an equally vague way, the expectations of his family.\u00a0 He thinks of joining the rebellion because he\u2019s romanticized it.\u00a0\u00a0 He thinks of going to the academy because it\u2019s anywhere but where he\u2019s at.\u00a0 All of his ambitions amount to this sort of nebulous, Anything But What I Have aspiration.\u00a0 He goes running after Kenobi on the strength of a shitty, recorded hologram because it seems exciting.\u00a0 He has no real idea about what this sort of mission would entail, or cost, or achieve.\u00a0 It\u2019s an Adventure, and he\u2019s bored.<\/p>\n

Then he meets Leia, and she\u2019s literally everything he ever had some mindless daydream about being<\/em>.\u00a0 Only instead of being a cardboard cut-out hero in some story he\u2019s using to distract himself from a shitty frontier subsistence-farmer life, she\u2019s a real person who\u2019s actually fucking doing it.\u00a0 She\u2019s a leader.\u00a0 She\u2019s a fighter.\u00a0 She\u2019s risking life and limb for a cause she completely and utterly understands and absolutely believes in.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t some thing she ran away to do because she got sick of being a princess and a senator.\u00a0 People look up to her, and follow her, and obey her, because she\u2019s spent her life earning it.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s looking around and going \u201cEmpire bad?\u00a0 We blow up ships?\u201d and she\u2019s going \u201cHere\u2019s ten political treatises on why the Empire needs to go, here are the details of troop movements and expected reinforcements and supply lines for the upcoming battle, and here are the family photos of everybody in the next ten systems that are going to get stomped into bloody paste in retaliation if we fail here.\u201d He finds her, and within five minutes she\u2019s gone from the princess he\u2019s rescuing because that\u2019s what action heroes do to the person he needs to emulate if he\u2019s ever going to make something of himself.<\/p>\n
