Johnson<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>Pronouns: She\/her<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li>This pioneer\u00a0was a\u00a0notable\u00a0transgender\u00a0rights activist and popular figure in\u00a0New York City\u2019s gay and art scene, as well as\u00a0one of the city\u2019s best known trans women of the times. She was a leader in clashes with the police amid the\u00a0Stonewall Riots.<\/li>\n<li>She was a co-founder, along with\u00a0Sylvia Rivera, of\u00a0Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries\u00a0(S.T.A.R.) in the 1970s, and also the \u201cmother\u201d of S.T.A.R. House along with Sylvia, getting together food and clothing to help support the young trans women living in the house on the\u00a0lower East Side\u00a0of New York.<\/li>\n<li>Once, appearing in a court the judge asked Marsha, \u201cWhat does the \u2018P\u2019 stand for?\u201d, Johnson gave her customary response \u201cPay it No Mind.\u201d This phrase became her trademark.<\/li>\n<li>In July 1992, her body was found floating in the\u00a0Hudson River,\u00a0shortly after the 1992\u00a0Pride March. Police ruled the death a suicide, but\u00a0her friends and supporters denied this, and a people\u2019s postering campaign later declared that Johnson had earlier been harassed near the spot where her body was found. Attempts to get the police to investigate the cause of death were unsuccessful.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>transhistorical: Marsha P.
