Love triangles only work when three people love each other. \u00a0Two people will romantically love a third, but the first two have to love each other platonically. \u00a0The lovers are conflicted, not only because they are trying to catch the attention of their beloved, but because they do not want to hurt each other.<\/p>\n

Cyrano de Bergerac<\/i> is a classic example. \u00a0Cyrano and Christian both love Roxane, but they also care about each other. \u00a0Cyrano gives up his suit for Roxane in part because he wants his friend Christian to be happy. \u00a0The conflict comes from Cyrano\u2019s self sacrifice for both of the people he loves.<\/p>\n

Twilight is not a love triangle, it\u2019s a rivalry. \u00a0Edward doesn\u2019t leave Bella because he wants Jacob to be happy; he leaves her because he thinks that\u2019s what\u2019s best for her.<\/i>\u00a0 His priority is always Bella. \u00a0Any time he works with Jacob, it is solely at the request of Bella for her benefit. \u00a0The driving force is always Bella.<\/p>\n

I could make one of these for all of John\u2019s dates, but you get the picture. \u00a0John wants Irene to tell Sherlock that she\u2019s alive, not because he cares about Irene and wants her to have a nice happy life with Sherlock, but because John thinks that Sherlock loves her and that will make him happy. \u00a0His motivations are entirely driven by Sherlock\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

This is a rivalry. \u00a0Sherlock\u2019s actions through S3 support John. \u00a0Everything he does, he does for John. \u00a0He plans the wedding rather than go out on cases for John, he teaches John to dance, he arranges the meet-up at the empty house for John. \u00a0If Sherlock wanted to help Mary, he could have easily done it without involving John. \u00a0If he truly shot Magnussen for Mary, why not bring her along? \u00a0She\u2019s a trained assassin! \u00a0Surely she could be some help. \u00a0Yet he drugs her and leaves her at home. \u00a0He excludes her because it\u2019s not done for her benefit. \u00a0He does not love her, platonically or otherwise. \u00a0Sherlock backs away from John romantically not because of his high regard for Mary, but because he wants John to be happy. \u00a0Mary benefits only because of her attachment to John. \u00a0Sherlock\u2019s sole focus is John\u2019s safety. \u00a0Mary compromises that, so Sherlock moves to protect her. \u00a0Without John, he wouldn\u2019t. \u00a0Sherlock does not care about Mary.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
