Here\u2019s the thing I will never get: I gather most of the guys heading up the abuse of women in gaming are straight. Why don\u2019t they WANT more women in gaming? Like, if you\u2019re straight, and you\u2019re a super hardcore gamer, wouldn\u2019t women taking an interest in video games be the most awesome thing ever? WTF?<\/p>\n

Remember that John Green thing about how being a nerd is about being able to unabashedly, unironically LIKE stuff and be EXCITED about stuff? I think that was one of the best things he\u2019s said, and it\u2019s one of my favourite things about geek culture \u2013 the idea of just being super into stuff, wholeheartedly and excitedly, whatever it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Part of being excited about your stuff should be being excited to find other people who are also excited about the same stuff, so you can share your excitement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Have you ever seen one of those videos of people having a Star Wars wedding or something like that and thought,\u00a0\u201cWow, that\u2019s cool, they totally committed to their thing.\u201d That doesn\u2019t happen if one of them gets all,\u00a0\u2018Oh, so you like Star Wars, eh? I bet you don\u2019t even have a B\u2019Omarr Monk action figure still in the original shipping box.\u2019 \u201d And it certainly doesn\u2019t happen if one of them is all,\u00a0\u201cHA HA HA HA HA I HOPE YOU GET RAPED!!!\u201d No, it happens when they\u2019re both like,\u00a0\u201cOMG YOU LIKE STAR WARS I LIKE STAR WARS TOO LETS MARATHON THEM ALL THIS WEEKEND AND WE CAN GET INTO A HUGE DEBATE OVER WHETHER OR NOT R5-D4 REALLY HAD A BAD MOTIVATOR OR WHETHER IT WAS SABOTAGE!!!\u201d And then they get to live the life.\u00a0<\/p>\n
